LOL
Your friend is not very smart.
An 8600GT will give you less than halve the performance of an 8800GT.
What FSX needs it tons of CPU power.
X2 3600 to X2 6400 should give you quite a boost in performance.

probably means v-sync. Look, knowing half the truth is worse than not knowing the truth at all. Don't listen to your friends. The all mighty Al Gore gave us the internet for a reason. Anybody can access a ton of info on a spit second. Just google around what your looking for and you're bound to find the answers. By the way, don't get sucked on the memory marketing gimick. Your 8800 is nearly twice as fast as the 8600 even though it has half the memory. I bet it's a cpu bottleneck. Go ahead and upgrade to the 6400, that would be the best move.

well v-sync lock shouldn't get locked up at 20 fps though. Normally v-sync locks are at 60 fps (that's the standard refresh rate of all monitors). So.. yes there is a bottleneck on the cpu. It would depend on what screen resolution he's playing on to determine how much memory he needs. But yes I agree with all these people that you shouldn't downgrade to 8600gt or else performance hit will be a lot worse.
