I have an old Dimension 5100 that I have been able to nurse along playing games on the lowest settings. But lately in Starcraft it's just too laggy.
I have a single core Pentium IV @ 3.0ghz with Hyper Threading (Prescott). I know, its old as dirt. My motherboard supports the LGA-775 socket. I already have 4GB RAM at the highest speed my mobo will allow and I've got an XFX Radeon HD 4670 (which is about equal to their 7950GT). I really don't have the money to build a new system. Honestly, I'm looking at about $100 to spend to get me by for about one more year. These are the CPU's that Newegg has in my socket type: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%2050001157%20600005851%20600030234&IsNodeId=1&name=Dual-Core
1. I am thinking of just keeping it simple and buying this dual core P4. The primary issues I have is that in 3v3's the game lags as the unit count rises, so I'm thinking having a second core should help me out. The sticky said some 775's do not support Wolfdale cores. How can I tell?
2. I'm also considering putting a Core2 in since they are cheaper now, but I have a couple of concerns. The sticky I read said some older 775 boards' BIOS will not support the Core2. Also my FSB is pretty slow, it may not even be worth it anyway.
3. Reguardless of what I get, they are all 64-bit processors. I currently have Windows 7 32-bit. Should I try to switch to Windows 7 64-bit? Will that help me out a lot?
A new mobo is pretty much out. The case form factor is a micro BTX, seems pointless to by a cheap micro BTX just to get me along for another year. This also means overclocking is out, since the Dell/Intel board is locked.
Thanks for your help, I hope there is a way I can get by with a processor upgrade!
