[HELP] NVIDIA GTX PCI 2.0

Hi,
I have a DELL Precision with ATI FirePro V7800 and I would like to add an NVIDIA. Primary reason is to code in CUDA and run some parallel processes there as well as to use as graphic card.

When I go to NVIDIA's site, all of their card are pci 3.0. I know I could use one of those, but I wonder if is an overkill and I should just get a 2.0

In newegg (just as well as amazon), there are plenty of NVIDIA 2.0 , for example 560 Ti , 570 and 580... Of course, they are slower than their counter part running in 3.0

So my question are as follows:

1) Should I get 3.0 or 2.0 knowing that my board is 2.0 PCI

2) Which NVIDIA model do you recommend. My budget is between 300 to 450. I could go up to 550 if needed.

3) Which brand do you guys like. How is EVGA

I believe 3.0 is backwards compatible to 2.0.

Ignore the 3.0 part. It will not affect performance at all and is just a market trick.

At that budget, you should go for GTX 670.

EVGA is great, their customer service is regarded as one of the best in the market.

Card of PCI-e 3.0 work on 2.0 boards.No problem there.

Your budget is in euros,dollars?Maximum I'd go is a branded GTX670.The sweet spot right now is for the 660ti(better
performance : price ratio).

The EVGAs are not the best,I'd recommend Asus or MSI.There are better brands but way too expensive.Asus and MSI perform very good,with solid clocks and the best cooling designs.

Or a XFX 7970 if your budget allows it, the latest 12.11 drivers have pushed it up, it probably is a bit better than a 670.

But if you want physics, etc only nvidia has it

In other news. PCI-E 3.0 works just fine on 2.0 as all have said.

So you are saying that it will not loose performance if I use a 3.0 in a 2.0 ?

Someone had said that performance will suffer, so it was worth buying just a 2.0

Performance WILL NOT suffer.

The best single Nvidia GPU is GTX 680, but it's only around 5% faster than GTX 670 and around $100 more expensive.

So you guys are saying that I should be choosing between GTX 670 and GTX 660 ti?

The 690 seems nice but way too expensive.

Yep 660-Ti and 670 both are very solid cards with a nice price/performance ratio.

My last 2 cards were EVGA and I'm really satisfied with them. However, I heard that newer MSI and Asus cards offer better cooling solution with less noise, but I'm not sure how big the difference is compared with EVGA.
