My E8500 needed 1.35 to get to 3.80 GHz at 400 MHz FSB. I had it running faster, but the thing became intolerant to higher voltage levels as time went by. It was an early sample and had a crappy core.

Recently-purchased E8500's will likely have the latest core and do around 4 GHz at only 1.25V. Keeping the voltage low is a great way to avoid the "voltage intolerant" problem my first E8500 had.

You should put the system together and run CPU-Z to let us know what core revision you have.

pretty much. a good overclock for you would be 400x9.5 that will give you 3.8ghz. it should do that around 1.3vcore. use intel burn test for stability. if it passes 10-20 runs of IBT then go for a 24hour prime run.

If you want 4.0 GHz I'd try 1.35V at 421 MHz FSB and see if it works first.
