Help on $2800 Budget for I7 Rig

Hey Guys i've used the forums before and found them quite usefull so I figured this would be the best place to ask for advice. Im looking to build a new PC and have gone a bit over bdget i need some help on cutting down the Price. I'm hoping to get around $2800 AUD = $1815 USD

I have spent months choosing these parts and i will definately be going for SLI in the near future hence the power supply and also i will be gaming on a 22" monitor without a bigger one for at least a couple of years.

BTW I live in Australia and these are all Australian Prices in AUD.

you dont need to sli a 285 with only a 22 inch monitor

and its a waste of money to use a Ci7 as a gaming cpu with only a single 285

even if you did sli two gtx 285's you wont need a 1000 watt psu

the wd 640 gig black has a 32 mb cache . check the model you are buying is correct

Go with a corsair 850tx for the PSU, that will be fine for your system.

You can go with an ASUS P6T for similar performance and lower price, EVGA boards are overpriced IMO.

That case is very nice, but also quite expensive. If you went with the CM 690 instead, you would have plenty of room for all your hardware, plenty of airflow, and save around $100 AUD.

I would highly recommend you get a bigger monitor, otherwise all that GPU horsepower will be wasted. Get a 24" with resolution 1920x1200. If you stay with that monitor you won't need another GPU.

Get a CPU cooler like the Scythe Mugen 2 so you can overclock the CPU and realize the full potential of your investment. Other good coolers are the Coolermaster v8 and the Thermalright Ulta 120 extreme rc 1366.

Now all that being said, outlander makes a good point. What are you going to be using this computer for? If its just gaming then you should go for a PII 940 or Q9550/9650 which will bring down the costs and you won't see a noticable drop in gaming performance. The i7 is worthwhile if you will be video editing/rendering, photoshop, CAD or the likes.

In regard to what you said would this be better with my monitor:

XFX nVidia Geforce GTX260+ 896mb Black Edition PCI Express Graphics Card - $520 AUD.

AS for the i7 i also do alot of photoshop and video editing that i do for school, i think i will downgrade the PSU to the 850w from corsair and i might get the GTX 260.

AS for th case i will be getting a big CPU cooling for alot of overclocking, i have seen this case before and loved it and it has great ariflow.

About the HD that was my typing error.

I would love to get a bigger monitor but its like another $150 which is money i jave but dont really want to spend.

I kNow im draggin this on alot but i really want this computer to last me for a few years at least with upgrades to the vid card maybe the CPU and more ram and then later on maybe a new MOBO. That's the reason that im really adamant on the Core i7

If you can get within budget by just trimming down the GPU and PSU to either one of these, then I would just do that.

1. GTX 260 Core 216 (55nm) & Corsair 850TX

2. 4870 1GB & Corsair 750TX (or PCP&C Silencer 750)

If I had to trim some more, then I'd go with the Asus P6T mobo or the Gigabyte EX58-UD4P.

After reading all your comments i have been assesing my rig and have cahnged a number of things.

Croc im not sure where u get ur pricing from but the Patriot Viper Ram is $100 more expensive. (I think you might have missed the fact that I live in Australia and it more expensive here) Im not really sure about what ur saying with the video card as it is cheaper than a GTX 280 and alot better and more effecient in terms of power.

The reason for the power supply is that i believe if u spend more on the core parts of the PC u can spend less on upgrades later. i.e Core i7, quality motherboard and power supply to futureproof as much as possible.

I've found a really good deal on a 24" monitor for only $20 More which is awesome. With this is mind i think i will stick with the gtx 285 and go for SLI later. I've cut the cost by removing the operating system and i am hopefully able to obtain one using other means AKA my friend works in a PC store.

Can't cut out more than that with your futureproofing theme. If you're happy with being slightly over-budget, then just stick with what you've got--it's a great build. While it is nice to have that Corsair 1000HX for eventual tri-SLI of the GTX 285, the Corsair 850TX is sufficient if you will only run 2 of those cards in SLI. I think that would get you closer to the line that you have set for yourself.

The only other thing I can think of is to wait until ATI releases its next video card in April, thus (hopefully) pushing down the price of the GTX 285.

Ya, I still think you could trim down on the PSU as well. go with the 850 verison. That will easly power 2 of those graphics cards. I also think it was a wise choice to upgrade the monitor to 1900x1200. That will help show the beauty of your rig quite nicely.

The patriot 1600 can be had from itestate.com.au for 239AUD. They also have a seasonic m12 700w PSU for 189. The Samsung monitor from MSY is, in my opinion, a better buy than your ASUS. Maybe go to your local Dick Smith or Harvey Norman and do some monitor browsing.

I posted a link to a recent multi-gpu review that I think you should read before spending money. I call that 'research'. I posted that link because I trust Derek's work, even though we have disagreements on presentation... Anyway, read his comments, don't just look at the pretty pictures. And speaking of the pretty pictures, look at the 1900 x 1200 graphs, particularily the price / performance charts.

You will never need a better GPU than what you have ordered unless you are willing to spend the big bikkies on at least a 30" monitor. And the seasonic 700w PSU will still be overkill, more than adequate even for two of those GPU's. Your Corsair will not even hit its effeciency range.

But hey, mate, its your money. Feel free to waste it as you please.

Thanks for all the advice guys and i found the patriot RAM thankyou although im still not sure which one to go with, with the power supply i used the PSU calculator and got about 750 with two cards, as i hope to be upgrading to a second card in the future.

I Have the 1000w for a bit of breathing room for now and for upgrades sure to come in the near future. As for the monitor i'va had bad experiences with samsung in the past and just generally dont like the look and feel of them but thats jsut my opinion. I Hope to be getting this computer in about a month but considering the great deal i saw for the monitor i think i will get that this weekend.

Thanks heaps guys feel free to comment more if you qould like 2 because the more advice the better.
