Hello, I just purchased a Asrock AB350 Pro4 last week and im trying to figure out how to do a bios update my current bios version is 1.30 and the latest bios version is 2.50.

Well, I've searched how to do a bios update and they say just download the bios update (ROM) put it on a flash drive and then instant flash. but in my current bios version it doesn't have any instant flash under it. And i learned that the instant flash will appear on bios version 1.50 or up.

This is from asrock FAQ: on how to update bios on am4 platform :
(Since AMD AM4 is a new structure and we just found BIOS cannot be completely updated by our Instant Flash. Thus, for the old BIOS version released before 2017/03/07, there is no "Instant Flash” option under BIOS. To make sure BIOS update can be executed completely, please use DOS or Windows BIOS update methods to do update temporarily.
After updating to the following version, Instant Flash functions and options are supported under BIOS and it can be used for updating the newer BIOS file in the future.)

and the only way to update bios is to update it within windows right? but when i download the bios update (DOS) and tried to open it windows is having error that it doesn't have the application to open the .exe so i've searched again how to do it within windows maybe i'm doing something wrong and saw in the tutorial thats when they download the bios updates they get 3 files 1 .exe file and 2 .sys files. can someone tell me how to do it is there something im doing wrong or am i missing something? can someone give me the link for my motherboards bios update with 1.exe and 2 .sys files. Thanks.

Solution

Be careful, ive not heard great things about asrock AM4 motherboards, a lot of there bioses are not tested properly and are bricking boards, seems to be mainly with bios version 2.2 though.

Here's the instructions for doing it in dos.
http://www.asrock.com/support/BIOSIG.asp?cat=DOS8

You can create a dos bootable USB stick with this:
https://www.howtogeek.com/136987/how-to-create-a-bootable-dos-usb-drive/

Then just download the dos version of the bios files, extract it and copy them to the USB stick too.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/AB350%20Pro4/#BIOS

now enter the bios first and load bios defaults before flashing.

reboot and boot from the USB stick in to DOS mode and follow instructions in the first link.

Solution

Hey thanks for replying with a solution. I think i have made a progress but still kept having problems i was on the last part where you boot to the usb dos and type in the bios update file name but when i do type it and press enter i kept having "Bad command or filename - "AB35P4_250.exe" did i do something wrong

http://imgur.com/a/KF377 here are the screenshot of the error and what the name of the biosupdate file is.

You command prompt is on C:\ are you sure thats the USB stick ??? its probably A:\, just make sure you use the DIR command first to list the contents of each drive until you find the correct prefix.

Its says at the top C: HD1, Pri 1, thats your main hard drive, as you've not got all the information in on that picture, I cant see any further, but thats not your USB stick where the file is, you need to CD to the USB stick then type the command again.

Hi, it worked thank you for your help i could have not done it without you thank you

hey dude can u recommend what version should we upgrade for our motherboard (Ab350 pro4) ? on the website the last version for this motherboard is 2.5 but im not sure to upgrade my bios to that version

2.5 is OK I think, just 2.2 or 2.1 that had all the bricking problems. If your board is the same board that this thread is about then you can just follow the instructions I posted here, well you can follow these instructions anyway, just make sure your download the correct bios for your board and must be the dos version.

I don't understand please help me! I'm having the same issue with it stating C drive and my USB is D. How do I change the drive?

just type D: at the command prompt and press enter

I have X370 gaming k4 MB, came with bios P1.50
I created a bootable usb disk (FreeDOS 1.2 lite) with bios updates 3.10 (dos exe) & 3.30 (rom)
- download fd12bu.img.7z archive & extract
- write img file to a usb flash disk (overwrites everything on it !) with:
sudo dd bs=1M if=fd12bu.img of=/dev/sdb status=progress
where /dev/sdb is your usb device (not sdb1 or sdb2)
- on the usb disk, replace 3.10 (dos exe) & 3.30 (rom) files with your board's bios updates
- boot from usb disk
- on freedos install prompt, say no to drop to dos shell
- run dos update.exe (latest dos bios update for your MB)
on reboot your MB will have new version & instant flash menu with which you can update to the latest bios rom
tested & worked on my MB.
my $.02
