My PCs case / motherboard / power supply were faulty so im gonna rebuy those components. Im keeping my hard disk (1tb hhd), graphics card (amd radeon hd 7770), cpu (i7-920) and ram but in have no idea how the compatibility works. Is it even something i need to worry about? What things do i need to look at to make sure all these components im gonna get are compatible with eachother and the rest? Is it much of a hassle?

(just if anyone would like to it would be great if someone could recommend me specific models of the new components)

Unfortunately, you can no longer buy compatible components for your 11-year-old CPU. Your Radeon graphics card also is outperformed by AMD's integrated graphics in their APU's. Here is a suggested new build for you:

Agreed. Given the high cost of new socket 1366 motherboards (required for your processor - ~$370), you could get a new core system (CPU/Motherboard/RAM) that would likely out perform your current system. Adding a new case and power supply:
