Jello everyone,

I'm in the process of finally upgrading my Intel i5 4690k and I would like some advice on which direction I should go. I dont know if I want to make the switch to AMD, and I was looking into the 11th gen i5 since the i9 doesnt seem worth the price tag. I'm not looking to break my bank, and my budget is about 1000 dollars to get both the processor and motherboard. I was just curious though, does anyone think it would be worth it to instead get an i9 10th gen over an i5 11th gen? I dont quite know what the number next to the i means in i5, i7, and i9, but maybe some info about what I use my PC for will help.

I usually use my PC for gaming. However I am also in school for video game design and I use various software like unity, 3ds max, zbrush, photoshop , and I usually have multiple of the programs open at the same time.

Good news is any of the newer chips will be a great upgrade!! I would get a 10th gen or 11 gen if going intel. If you have a MicroCenter close they have some amazing deals on the 10th gens. 10700, 10850k. Great chips!!

Harder to find AMD chips right now, and most don't have build in video (IGPU).

MB and CPU should be easy to do for 1k.

Fuma 2 is a great value awesome cooler at 60 bucks.

I would get the best deal. Intel has IGPU if you need that (nice to have a backup).

I got the 10850k for 329, 10700 was 229.........that is great value I think.

11400 is 169.99 (not a bad chip at all)

Good luck!!

Personally i'm running an 11th gen Core i7-11700K, and did debate opting for the i9-11900K, but the extra £200 price difference (I'm UK based) did not seem worth the marginal extra performance, looking at benchmarks between the two most users typically reported a 2-3 FPS increase in most modern games. Hardly worth it to me.

I'd personally go intel over AMD, I started with AMD on their Turion chips, and then moved over to intel when they were on about the 4th or 5th generation chips if I recall, the i7-3700K, around about 2013-2014 time.

I've never gone back to AMD since.

If I was in your position, i'd go with the i5, using the newest generation technology. A lot of it comes down to what you want to do with it, if it's for playing games, some games have a single core bias, and a lot of others have a multi-core bias, it all depends on the game. I would think for most things, an 11th gen i5 would be sufficient, unless you plan on hardcore gaming with everything cranked to max on some of the newest releases.
