Hey guys,

I am an idiot on OC, that's why I am coming here to help.
I need a step by step guide for overclocking my 5960X.

My rig setup:
5960X with MSI X99S Gaming 9 ACK
Corsair H100i liquid cooling
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666MHZ CL15
ASUS GTX780 DirectCUII OC
CM HAF X

My current temp always run between 30 - 50 from idiling to video rendering

I am aiming to overclock to 4-4.2.
Please help me...

Solution
I am sorry for saying that but you have a beast of a processor and you really do not need an overclock.
It has plenty of speed to run anything you throw at it in a very small period of time.
I would suggest you do not overclock it,you will decrease the lifespan of this beast a lot and you will not see any benefits from the overclock.

Solution
Bro, really? A lot of ppl are advising me to OC my beast and release the beast within. I am not that type of person to keep oc and oc and oc. But I really need to release the beast! haha.

I will recommend to do overclocking in bios because it needs less voltage, higher oc and if also increase the processor life comparable to oc by software. Also If you get Any manual settings and of you go for that then the oc will be unstable and will produce more heat. If you give less voltage then you will get unstable oc and if you give higher voltage then it will produce more heat and will reduce CPUs life. So it is important to find a sweet point of correct combination of frequency and voltage. To do that Just follow this Steps:
1) just enable your XMP memory profile if your memory support that.
2) increase the cpu ratio from factory settings a little(whichever smallest possible) and boot in your os.
3) Download cpu stress testing software prime95 and do a stress test around 20 minutes.
4) if it passes then restart and go in bios, increase a little cpu ratio again a little bit.
5) if it passes then repeat 4th method. And if it not passes then go in bios and increase the CPU voltage and again test. Just keep doing that.
6) a time will arrive when the temp will gone so high, at that time you have to stop and keep it to cool.
7) also when doing upper methods you have to keep a eye on your temps.
8) a step will arrive when prime95 will never pass or the temp will gone so high immediately when stress test started, that point you have to stop and you get the unleashed speed of your processor. You got a stable oc now. Watch temps and don't let them go above 80.
Also see the guide that I given below, it will tell you the basics.
Best luck.

Saif Uv. Would you argue that OC 5960x is pointless for a 3D artist. I have overclocked mine to 4.4ghz and I have to say from user experience I am not seeing any benefit. Other than it just being less stable.

Please may you briefly make an argument to why OC is a no go for me.

I am very tempted to revert back to stock speeds. Having it OC am I actually meant to be getting any advantages in Cinema 4D & After Effects etc.

Thanks

Im not an expert of CPUs or anything though.
We are talking about 5960X an 8 core processor with 16 threads built on efficient Haswell architecture almost already pushed far enough (Im not talking about the frequency). Considerably best mainstream processor (Experts: correct me if im wrong) available Idk if Xeon 18 core is mainstream or not.
You think that 3.0 Ghz is too low ?
Please notice that frequency doesnt matter that much in new intel processors.
I`d say you should only OC your processor if
1) its lagging
2) its old and you just want to see whats the limit of the chip and have no problem with frying it because you`re going to get a new one soon.
Drawbacks of OCing
1) You may fry your dear chip
2) You definitely are decreasing the life span of your chip.
3) Instability etc
4) CPU running at high temps . ( You must want to keep it cool ).
You certainly dont want that with your processor you bought for 1k.
And YES OCing 5960x is pointless for a 3D artist considering that even AMD FX series with 6-8 cores do well in rendering and 3D stuff ( correct me if im wrong experts) .
And single core performance of this chip must be twice as AMD FX processors.

What's the point of buying a Intel Extreme processor and not Overclocking the shit out of it?

Thanks. I think you have mentioned some good points.

I am going to go back to stock speed. The main reason being is that I am finding it not that stable at 4.4 ghz. I am getting a few crashes on applications and freezes. I moved from Mac to Windows so I dont know if Windows always does this? When you buy a £900 cpu you dont expect any major issues. I will report back with how the stock speed 5960X is vs the OC (in terms of user experience and not benchmarks etc).

Thanks

The rashes and freezes are due to inadequate voltage to the cpu. Increase the voltage with 0.025 increments and you will see these problems vanish.

Hi Mugglensu1984.

I have take your advice and tweaked the voltage from 1.280 to 1.295.

I am now doing some heavy cinema 4d rendering to test stabiltiy etc and everything seems good. temps are bouncing around from 70-86. It does drop down to 50 degrees between frames. When idle I am getting around 40 which is good. I must say that upping the voltage really does seem to eliminate my "rashes and freezes" etc. So I think I owe you a massive thank you on that one.

Here are my specs:

5960x cpu
Motherboard | RAMPAGE V EXTREME
titan x gpu
32gb ripjaw ram
loads of hhds and ssds.
Corsair Hydro Series H100i
Corsair 850m 850W psu
Corsair Obsidian Series 750D ATX Full Tower

here is also HW monitor text file if that can tell you anything.

So many noobs here its unbelievable. Are you serious ? Buy an unlocked cpu just to not overclock it ? They dont come overclocked from factory because intel doesnt know what heatsinks people are using. As long as you have a good cpu heat sink that will not allow the cpu to go above 80 degrees then you will be fine with the lifespan. Explaining to someone how to overclock isnt easy, there are many different things that you have to do.

There are many overclocking sites on the 5960x just have a look. I have 5820k at 4.6ghz and 1.29 volts . But you could set your voltage at 1.25 and multiplier to 40, then carry on increasing the multiplier by 1 so go 41,42,43... until you get a crash ( Blue screen ) then if you have a watercooling setup, increase to 1.3 voltage, if on air, leave voltage and decrease ratio by 1. Back to water cooling, keep increasing ratio until next crash, if you get to 4.6 with 1.3v then you are lucky. I wouldnt suggest going above 1.3v. So if you hit 4.4ghz on 1.3v and you get a crash, go down to 4.3ghz. Most people get stuck at 4.5 or they need loads of voltage which produces soooo much heat that it isnt worth it. If you do get to 4.6, you can either, go higher ( more voltage = more heat = high temp ) or you can stay at 4.5-4.6ghz and start decreasing voltage by 0.1 until crash. I only managed to decrease mine by 0.1, 1.28 at 4.6 doesnt work, but 1.29 with 4.6 works fine. I could try to go higher but 4.6 is good enough for me. No need.
EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE VOLTAGE OR MULTIPLIER YOU HAVE TO RUN STRESS TEST TO MAKE SURE THAT UR PC IS STABLE. ( at least for 10 - 15 min before you go back to bios to raise again )

I think hes raised some stupid points. Overclocking from 3.3 to 4.3 will reduce video render time by 20-40%. My score on cinebench with 5820k on stock is 1000, overclocked 1500. Overclocking gave me additional power of 4790 which scores 600. So dont say overclocking is useless because it gives you additional cpu power.
Revision to stupid answer.
1. No current cpu will lag unless 6 year old.
2. every new cpu has tj-max temp set so pc will shut down before frying. Cpu can handle over 100 degrees, tj-max is set at 95 for all, some set it lower. i got mine at 85. Never reached it.
Drawbacks ?
1. THIS IS NOT 1999, motherboard will not allow 2015 to be fried. We are in 2015, technology is advanced and x99 platform will never allow a cpu to get fried. It will shut down or throttle.
2. As long as you are keeping it below 80 degrees, you grand children will still have that chip running.
3. Instability ? Well if people like you overclock then yeah. I overclocked from 3.3 to 4.6 and not a single crash, rather massive improvement.
4. ONLY CORRECT POINT. Well done. Yes cpu will run hotter but as long as you have good cpu heatsink its fine.
4.5 BULLSHIT like i said. Rendering benefits SO MUCH on overcloking. Gaming doesnt so much. But rendering. Oh god. My cinema 4d animations render sooo fast. My previous 4690k had no chance. Rendered same project, 5820k 4.6 did it in 39 seconds, 4690k 3.9ghz in 4 MINUTES

DIdnt check xD found it on google whilst looking at what is m0 stepping in my 5820k xD
