Hello,

I am planning on building a gaming rig and was hoping I could get feedback on what i have so far.

Chasis : Corsair Carbide 400R
Mobo : MSI H170 gaming M3
CPU : I5 6600K
SSD : Crucial MX100 512GB
HDD : WD 1TB Caviar Blue
RAM : Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2400 2x8GB
PSU : Thermaltake TR2 800W 80+ Bronze

I would be gaming at 1080p but I might bump it up in the future that is why i took the 800W PSU. I was thinking, should I get the Sapphire Nitro R9 390? with this video card I can upgrade easier since the mobo is Crossfire compatible.

Or should I get a GTX 970 and change the mobo for a SLI compatible one?

Ive used AMD and Nvidia cards before so there is no preference here, any would do. I just want to hear your opinions on the matter and see if I can improve my build. Also if you could suggest better motherboards that would be great (I have yet to find any reviews on the mobo I picked) Thanks!

that thermaltake is not very good, basically its junk

you need a tier 1 or 2 unit from here:

Go for the GTX 980 or R9 390x depending on your budget. If no, then please specify your budget.

My budget for now restricts options on GPUs. I was thinking whether to go for an Sapphier Nitro R9 390 or a Zotac GTX 970. In my country the prices does not differ that much. Also I now realize I need a better PSU and a Z170 motherboard.

Any suggestions?

Unless you think that you would use the shadowplay or other NVidia features I would say that you should get the 390. It's a little bit faster and the 8gb of vram makes a bit more sense for higher resolutions.

If you are in the US i think there's currently a rebate offer on the EVGA B2 psu. You can get a 750w unit. This PSU is a Tier 2 unit so it should be good. I have a EVGA 750 G2. A bit pricey but well worth it. It will last me for a couiple of builds.

Im Actually from the Phillipines. It's a bummer because finding good parts here is quite hard. I did a compute of possible power consumption if I go ahead and purchase a secondary R9 390 and it amounts to 723 W. With this in mind is it okay if I go for a 750 W model or should I buy an 800 W PSU?

Im thinking about getting Seasonic P-760 Platinum or the FSP Aurum 850. Your thoughts on these?

I think i'm already sold on getting an R9 390. Getting a motherboard that is SLI compatible will cost me more and im already stretching my budget. Could you suggest any good motherboards? I made a mistake and now realize i need a Z170 model.

I just want to update my thread. I have done a bit more looking around and come up with these parts. Please tell me what you think of them.

Similar Parts:
CPU : I5 6600K
Chasis : Corsair Carbide 400R
HDD : WD Caviar Blue 1TB
SSD : Crucial MX100 512 GB
RAM : Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2x8GB
Cooler : Noctua NH-D15
Monitor: AOC E236IFWH

Possible Build #1 (Nvidia)
Mobo : Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI
GPU : Palit Jetstream GTX 970
PSU : Seasonic P-660 Platinum

Possible Build #2 (AMD)

Mobo : MSI Z170A PC MATE
GPU : Sapphire R9 390 Nitro
PSU : Seasonic P-860 Platinum

Please note that i chose these PSUs because i want to be able to add another GPU in the future that is why their power rating is higher than what i would normally need in this build. I live in the Philippines and the price difference between the two builds is about $5 if you converted it.(AMD build is higher by 5$) What do you guys think?

Yes I was getting more and more inclined into the AMD build. I think it would be more future proof. Seeing as DX12 games are incoming. But what do I know. I really dont mind brands, the 8GB Vram is nice though.

My rule is always get at least 100w more than the max your system could possibly use. So with two R9 390's you you should run 850w PSU as a bare minimum. All PSU's can lose overall maximum power over time. Your 723w system will mean a 750w PSU will pretty much be running at 100% if you play games. Not good for long term realiability.

Not heard FSP but they appear to be both on the Tier 1 PSU list. If you are definately going to get another R9 390, the Seasonic is under powered, in my opinion. Seasonic have a good rep.

Can you get Super Flower leadex psu's were you are? if so are they cheaper than the seasonic and FSP? They are extremely good, just google super flower leadex review. I think they do a 850w unit.

Yeah I did see FSP as a Tier 1 PSU in the list but ive never worked with that kind before. But since it is on the list i guess it's okay to use it. The PSUs here in the philippines are quite few with regards to brands and I havent seen a PSU with the brand super flower yet. I might try and look for it. Thanks for the suggestion man.

I agree. Superflower and Seasonic make excellent psu

If you can't find a superflower psu, i know that the EVGA GS, B2 and G2 psu's are re-branded Superflower units. Here in the UK the EVGA's are more widely available than superflower's, and cheaper. I've a 650w G2 in my rig :)

Superflowers are available through overclockers, Bungle11.

I agree though. Though I slightly prefer Seasonic so I would take the XFX XTS or XTR which are amazing. Though some Seasonic psu's have killer deals without being rebranded.

I know. The superflower leadex gold is £88 + postage. I got a EVGA G2 (which is the same unit without the LED powerplugs) for £72 with free postage from Dabs (they had a free postage promotion. So really no contest in the UK as i don't need LED lit power connectors. If more suppliers did superflowers in the uk, i'm sure they be £10 cheaper.

The thing is, would the FSP Aurum be a good PSU substitute?

I guess im gonna have to get the Seasonic P860. But from my understanding, this is a very good PSU right?
