I recently put together a gaming rig. Specs:

GPU: Visiontek R9 290x
Processor: i5 4460
MOBO: ASrock H97 pro 4
Memory: 8gb G.Skill Sniper

My current powersupply is an older 610 watt unit. Ive been told and have seen that the Vistiontek version of the R9 290x requires a minimum of 750 watts. Is this true? If so, money is tight and this is an unexpected expense. What is the most affordable powersupply for my rig.

Thank you!

The most likely 'worst' that can happen is that your main capacitors fails, and with a good CPU, that will mean a quiet, cool, death. (as opposed to the loud, hot, deaths of cheaper systems)

In intense gaming, your GPU may attempt to draw more power than the capacitors of your PSU can supply.

Do you know how many 12V amps you have on your main rail?

I would certainly try it. I have a hard time waiting too. :)
Are you in the USA? If so, the EVGA-110-B2-0750-VR semi-modular is my Go-to PSU. It cots about $60 at the moment, but is often available for $50 or less.

A 650W PSU would do, but most (all?) will be more expensive than the PSU I mentioned above.

I would not want to run that GPU on the 610W PSU you have, it is too low-performance.

You don't need a 750W PSU for that rig. A good quality PSU in the 600W range will suffice.

The XFX TS Edition PRO650W would do just fine and costs $70:

Edit: IF you can find a good price on the PSU DonkeyOatie referenced above then definitley get that, it is also a fantastic PSU that will support your rig very well. Here it is below on Newegg, though there it goes for $90:

The XFX 650 would be my second choice. I use XFX in one of my other systems.
