Hello everyone!

So I had this issue for several months, and I seriously thought that it's because of my other parts of computer. I had an older build and I put my windforce gtx 1080 in it (was purchased in 2017 november), it was okay for a while, lets say for until January. Then suddenly my fans started to spin, to like 100% then go down again. I was like what is going on? Well, it wasn't too often, until it got to a point where it did this EVERY SINGLE TIME I started a game. Now that was the time where I brought the GPU to my friend's PC (he has the same exact GPU as me) and believe it or not it was working PERFECTLY!! I was like okay, Imma build myself a brand new PC except the GPU and I'm sure it's going to work that way. Well, it didn't.

I have an i7 8700k, kraken x62, corsair rm650x, strix z370-f and on benchmarks and games there come the fan spikes again where they spin up that they sound they are going to explode, for couple seconds, then they go down again. I am really afraid that it will be the same, when I couldn't even do anything, even after exiting the game the fans were still at 100%. I really don't want to do this.

I have tried ABSOLUTELY everything in the last 3 months to fix it, in my old build, and now in my new build. Fresh OS Install, clean install drivers, plug into another PCI-E slot, try different fan control programs (Aorus, Gigabyte, MSI afterburner, etc etc) and the fan curve DIDN'T WORK as it should because there were still fan spikes. So I tried like literally everything, so there's nothing new you can tell me, except one thing I'll mention later.

First please take a look at these videos and pictures:

-Fan spikes in old build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5mRL0j3XOM

-Fan spikes in new build:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY5AEwzFaiA
(also have coil whine now, and I have no idea how?! can I even fix it?)

-And here's a picture of HWMonitor https://imgur.com/a/7fzOV sometimes this is what it shows after fans have gone crazy (this is the highest ever achieved, second was only 20k RPM)

I have latest nvidia drivers installed, motherboard bios updated. Only thing I did not update is GPU BIOS. I am not sure how to do that, but I've seen one thread where someon had similar issue, and Gigabyte has helped him with a new bios (GPU bios I believe). https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/gigabyte-gtx-1080-g1-gaming-fan-spikes.223629/

This was from 2016 though. You think it's still relevant?

Could anyone PLEASE HELP ME?! How can I make this issue finally go away, and why wasn't it there at my friend's PC? I am really disappointed in Gigabyte, and also that I can't RMA in Europe only because it was purchased in the US. I would even pay if I could get it repaired.

You did not read and checked my pictures in the post. I can set a fan curve with MSI Afterburner as well, but it doesn't matter what I do, I keep getting these extremely loud fan noise from time to time. Sometimes for just a second, sometimes it lasts minutes..

I know the chances of this advice is pretty slim, but have you tried reseating the GPU and/or putting it in a different slot? I'm near positive that the fans shouldn't be going that much but I'm not sure.

Too bad my mobo only has one slot, and yea I've tried to take it out and put it back 🙁 nothing changed..Whenever the GPU is under use, first it starts with that cracking sound I also mentioned in the thread with a video. Then when it's under use for a certain amount of time, fans are starting to spin up.

The cracking's probably the fan bearings, but dang that's loud. Do you have a spare GPU or have one that your friends can lend and see if the problem carries over?

I can't decide if that fan is rubbing against something or if it's just wobbling (the cracking sound video) or its motor is dying. There are various youtube videos on how to fix your fans that are way better than any explanation I can provide, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WYFYFHRtjE&pbjreload=10 and others.
My advice is get under there and first figure out which fan is it. To me it sounds like a little less grindy version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqjSWD_o8iA or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WYFYFHRtjE&pbjreload=10. One of the fans might be going or it might just be rubbing up against something. Replacement fans can be obtained on ebay if cleaning and checking clearance doesn't help, or just get a new shroud from arctic if you don't mind shelling out some $$. https://www.arctic.ac/worldwide_en/products/cooling/vga.html That way you get rid of noise issues hopefully.

The start and stop you describe is familiar as I have gigabyte g1 1070 and it does that when it's cutting out the fans at whatever temp you set as a limit. Your limit at 50 is high. Most of my game temps on gpu will hover around 45-55C so that would make constant start and stop on the fans, resulting in the grinding noise you hear. I have an msi board so not using afterburner, but I generally set it pretty low when I game in order to avoid constant grind but I slope the curve more gently so they're not spinning very high when temps are decent. My curve for gaming is start on fans is on 32Cish but at like 300 RPM so they are very silent and not constantly spinning up
I keep hwmonitor on and keep an eye on both temps and rpms during gaming, making sure they never spin to insane speeds and that my temps are in check. Decent case temps also help with this.
For all regular browsing and video watching and such, you set your limit higher
so that the fans are always off.

Hey there! Sorry I've been busy and I somehow slipped through the email that I got a response from you.
It's getting worse and worse. The extremely sound fan starts to kick in, in every single game I start, after a couple minutes. Updated the drivers, nothing happened.

I'm trying a fan curve where the fans should start spinning at 20-30-40. But it's still weird that for example when I minimize a game, GPU is still 65 celsius, but the noise is done within a minute or so.

EDIT: GPU is at 72 celsius, with still a minimized game. And fans are perfectly fine, just as they need to be I guess. So I am more than sure it is a malfunction.

EDIT: As soon as I went back to the game the fans started to spin at max speed again...No idea what to do, since it looks like the fan curve doesn't even work.

Ok so while I'm playing the game, the fans will indeed spin harder. If I minimize, their speed drops dramatically as you'd expect. Depending where your curve cutoff point is with regards to temperature, is when the noise is going to start happening. Say I set it at 35 to start spinning, if I minimize and wait a minute for the temp to drop off, they're going to start grinding cause temp is hovering around 35.
72 is kind of high, I'd expect lower temp if your fans were working properly or if you set your curve so they start spinning earlier. If you did, and still that high temp, then yeah likely something is wrong. If you look at hwmonitor when you do this, do you see your fans spinning when the gpu is at 72C? What is the rpm? If you peek at the underside of your gpu, can you confirm all the fans are spinning?

Weird thing is that sometimes it shows as 0 RPM, but sometimes I even had 20k RPM, that was the record lol.

Uh...20k rpm is an error. I know of no fan that spins that fast. 0 RPM occasionally is right if it's doing that hovering between off and on, but 20k seems off. I'd say something is wrong with how afterburner is reading it. If this is hwmonitor you're getting the 20k values from...then not sure. Reporting of fan speed is definitely off and since this is the gpu, would hint at something wrong either with the gpu or with its compatibility with your mobo as sensors on gpu usually report that info in all the newer card models, definitely in a gtx 1080.

here 🙁

I have built a completely new pc with these specs (except GPU):

-i7 8700k
-kraken x62
-strix z370-f
-corsair rm650x
-ddr4 trident Z 16gb

I still have the issue!!! Not very often but the fans start to spin for no damn reason. Even though I tried different fan curves with different softwares, right now I have a FIXED fan curve set on MSI afterburner, thought it was okay bc fans didn't start spinning like crazy for a couple hours of gaming, then suddenly it did. And it did today as well. I contacted Gigabyte again, let's see what they are going to say, I am really curiouos. Read some thread where someone had similar issues and they suggested a BIOS flash. I would be really glad if I could finally fixed this, after spending 1200 eur on my new PC (except GPU), cause I thought the parts are old that's why it did that. I have tried the GPU 2 times in my friend's PC, couple hours of gaming, not a single noise came from it, everything went so smooth just like his GPU (he has the exact same GPU). So I really have no idea.

And to answer your question, yes I didn't take it all apart but from what I can tell from the outside, I don't see a single dirt in the fans. And if it was indeed dirty, would it cause the fans to suddenly spin at max speed for no reason? Just because it's dirty? It would make no sense to me. I also have coil whine now...

Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY5AEwzFaiA

My other thread: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/917039-gigabyte-1080-fan-issues-help-me/
(i know i was stupid at some point, cause fans spinned at max speed almost everytime because a fan was blocked, but it is NOT right now, and it still does from time to time...when I exit the game it slowly stops though, or when it drops like 10 degrees because of the excessive speed)

Obviously the problem is the gpu (which i would give to a technician to take a look. About the dirt, dirt can be the reason for a pc not turning on. It will make alot of sense to me. The dirt causes airflow issues then temperatures go up, then fans go crazy. It makes sense. Anyway replacing the fan will fix the issue.

Its worth taking the card appart and taking a look at the heatsink tho. You said you saw it only from the outside. If you bought the card at the end of 2017 it should have warranty?! If it does just send it to the people you bought it from ( if it wasnt second hand)

Yea sure, I really want to give it to a technician, I'm ready to pay for someone to take a look at it, but unfortunately I didn't find anyone. Yea replacing the fans may resolve the issue but
1. I don't know where to buy these kind of fans
2. I don't want to switch to regular case fans as LTT did in a video, as it would really look kind of ghetto, and I built my PC in a way to look good, tempered glass case, RGB n stuff...

Oh and I don't think 65-70 degrees are such ridiculous temps for fans to go crazy.

Oh finding the exact fans is easy, also you dont have to switch to regular case fans you could just order some rgb ones. But dont they're not the problem. I will find you some new fans just tell me the exact model of the gpu 1080ti , 1080 windforce (three fans) regular 1080? Sorry if you mentioned earlier

It wasn't second hand, it was a brand new bought from Newegg (it was discounted on ebay). But that's where the sad part comes, cause I already tried to RMA, but since I'm from the EU (relative brought it to me here) they DO NOT FREAKIN OFFER a global warranty service, so I can't just send it back, I have to actually pay the shipping costs to the US, and they also won't ship it back to the EU...It's a joke seriously.

It's a Gigabyte 1080 Windforce OC 2

Yes, I will probably never buy another Gigabyte product because of this. They actually have service here in EU, but since I bought mine in the US, they also checked the serial number, they refused to get it from me, as it was not purchased in this region. Like what the actual f*** seriously?
