1) Scan your machine form virus and spyware.
2) Start>Run and type without quotes "msconfig". Go to "Startup" tab and *uncheck* all the entries (note that this will disable your antivirus and your firewall if you use a third-party one). Restart and see if it gets faster. If so, check the entries one by one untill you find the culprit(s). Also if you start your machine with USB devices plugged, unplug them.

You don't happen to use Trend Micro for your antivirus, do you?
They had an issue with an update causing 100% cpu usage. Made my
machine take 15 minutes to boot up. Once booted up no programs
would start, obviously. If this is the case post back and I'll
post the fix.

gls858,
no i am running zonelab. i unchecked zone alarm from the software
rather than msconfig and restarted and that seemed to fix the problem.
almost 2 days wasted. i almost reformatted the drive and reinstalled
everything! i may have to because my wireless network card is not being
picked up still. another problem...another day. thanks for your reply
though!
mike

Reformatting is the very last option and usually not necessary.
Unless you like loading software and reconfiguring everything :)
As far as the card goes make sure you have the latest drivers and
uninstall and reinstall. A non working network card is no reason
to reformat AND it may not fix the problem.
