2.5 and 3.5 inch just means the width of the drive. They using the same SATA connection already. You can just plug it in, provide it with power and plug the SATA into the motherboard. It should come up as a secondary disk.

Just make sure it doesn't have an OS on it from the old system. It could try to duel boot and cause problems. I would advise you wipe it before plugging it into the system.

Now if you are talking about BAYS. That is a different story. Look for something like this.

So you finally built your PC - - well it's not finished yet until you install a new, empty hard drive in it, then install Windows on it or whatever OS you plan to use.

You can use your laptop's hard drive if your PC case has any 2.5 inch drive bays, otherwise you need to buy a mounting kit.

However, you cannot use the existing Windows installation that's on the laptop drive.

You must reformat the existing OS partition, then install a fresh Windows from scratch.

It would make more sense to leave your laptop drive alone & go buy a new 3.5 inch one for your new build.

Ok I just wasn't sure if the drive sticker saying (serial ata) on the drive meant it took different connectors. And could I plug it with external USB adaptor first to wipe the drive?

Yes. Exactly. SATA is SATA, the connectors are the same. (only difference is in speeds such as SataI, SataII, SataIII)

And yes. Plug it up with external usb adaptor to another machine and it wipe first.

I want keep the 320 hardrive in there also , it already has the os installed on it, this would be a secondary drive , until I can eventually Invest in a ssd
