I have a gtx 760 and I replaced the thermal paste and it stopped working so I took the cooler off again and found thermal paste in around the gpu covering some transistors so I cleaned that up and I wondered if I could test it without thermal paste for a few minutes (with the cooler on of course)
Update: I fixed it

Glad you go it working.
Be very careful when applying thermal compound, since it could be electrical conductive and could short transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc.
When it comes to thermal compound, less is more.

agree. Some people will say their method is better, but take not dell trains their onsite techs to blob a dot and then allow the heatsink to spread it evenly by screwing the screws in a cross pattern like you would a tire on your car
