Description of problem

I just finished passing down my old desktop to my girlfriend with a fresh windows 10 install on the SSD. She is moving up to windows 10 from 7, and doesn't want to lose anything she had so I put her old windows 7 HD in her new computer. Everything was working fine for a couple of boots (finishing the installation, ninite, graphics drivers) and I was able to access the data on both drives. On the last reboot to finish setting it up, the boot screen was stuck at the windows 10 logo for a long time, about 30 minutes. At that point I restarted the computer, and it booted up in just a few second like normal. This time, her old drive wasn't detected. I also stuck a new HD in her old pc for a media center computer with windows 10.
What I've tried so far to recover the data

I started up windows 10 disk manager and found that the drive was found, but the capacity was listed as 0, the drive wasn't mounted, smart data wasn't found, and it was asking me to initialize (which I later tried out of frustration, but nothing happened as there was an I/O error.) The Bios would detect the HD and model number, and even listed the capacity. The capacity listed was slightly larger than it normally would be (as though it was formatted differently). Booting to it did nothing (even though there should still be a bootable windows 7 install).I've tried several software recovery tools, including EaseUs data recovery, Stellar Phoenix, and Wondershare, but none would do anything since it wasn't mounted. I also tried a few options on Hiren's boot cd, but the most they would do is detect the drive (sometimes with the right capacity, sometimes 0), and most of them didn't even do that. The WD diagnostic tool said it passed, but showed 0 capacity and that it wasn't mounted.

Hardware-wise, I've tried different power cables, data cables, different ports for the data cables on the motherboard, and the same with it on her old computer with the new windows 10 install. The only different thing I noticed, is that on her old computer, even when booting to the new HD with Windows 10, if the broken HD was plugged in, the windows 10 boot would fail. I've tried holding it in various positions including on its side and upside down. The disk is definitely still spinning. I have noticed that it clicks a couple of times when it starts up before ceasing the clicking, but the GF says it's been doing that for a while.

Did it really just happen to die right there, did windows 10 really chew it up, or is there anything else I can try short of spending $1000 on a recovery?

I'd really like to get the data back, so even if it's only running long enough to copy some files, that'd be great.

Solution
My thought would be to try installing the HDD WD Green in a USB enclosure and see if the drive becomes accessible via USB.

As always remember that anything you do may cause additional data loss or pre-empt any data recovery at all.

Still the USB enclosure may be worth the try and you have the option of plugging it into some other computer.
