I know someone's played this recently. I feel like I'm stuck way early, but
there are no hints so I need help from somewhere else.

I can't get past the gate. I have seen the house (letter and gun) and Nazi
plane (corpse) and I'm carrying Tom's dead body. I can't get anywhere
interesting, but I assume locked gate = something else to do. Help anyone?

I'm not sure how well it's hinted (I tried this on a whim), but you can
open the plane, search it, and find a grenade which will blow open the gate.
