Help running dual monitors

Okay. I am attempting to run dual monitors, off a desktop. I have both monitors plugged into a vga splitter. Both monitors show windows. The problem is, they are mirrored. So my second monitor shows what is on the main monitor. How do I fix this?

Hit the Windows Key + P, change it from duplicate to extended either by hitting Win+P, arrow keys, or clicking.

If that doesn't work right click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution, and under multiple displays change that setting to "Extend these displays"

by "VGA splitter" you mean one of these: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/330326476576-0-1/s-l1000.jpg
If so you will get the same image on both screen, no way to have two screen on one video output.

I had completely missed the VGA splitter thing, Thanks fa324.

fa324 is correct if you are using a splitter you will get the same image on both displays no matter what. The monitors need to be connected to separate outputs.
