Hello,

I have i3 1430 + gtx 750 at present. I look to replace it with either

i7 4790 + gtx 960 4gb
or
i5 6500 + gtx 950

Which would be better? As you can see, going for skylake will need me to rebuild everything. Which is better and will the i7 hold off good? I want to play games at high settings and do a bit editing.

Thanking in advance.

If the two options cost the same, go with the i7 4790 and GTX 960. It is a very good CPU and will last you for a long time. You could even maybe go with something like an i5-4690 and GTX 970, depending on what prices are like for you.

Those 2 are so close in performance that it's a moot point honestlyhonestly. You'll not be looking for extreme performance with either, so you'll need to look at the other options. I7 vrs i5, gtx960 vrs gtx950 etc. Unless you are planning on using what few benefits lga1151 has over lga1150, the i7-960 would be a much better overall option with the ht bonus on editing and stronger gpu.

You should get a 1151 i7 and the cheapest GTX 950. The 960 might not hold it's value. Then you can later upgrade to a pascal video card.
