I'm having trouble OCing my xp2400+. I'm aiming to set the fsb at 150mhz X 15. I have a cooler master with adjustable fan speed knob on a pci bracket. I also have 3 case fans. When I set the fsb to 150 sometimes the pc shuts off. I'm thinking I didn't apply enough thermal grease. Right now it is at 130mhz. The mobo temp is 35C and the cpu temp is 56C. Is it possible that not enough thermal grease is the problem? Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

What motherboard?
What RAM?

My board just wont go over 147 MHz FSB, that is because the PCI bus can't handle it. The CPU will probably go much higher, but the motherboard can't handle the speed. So I don't think you have a CPU problem at all, it is motherboard/peripherals overspeed.

Hmm, can you lock the PCI/AGP ratio? if not that might be your problem.

And probably not a thermal problem AMDS should just rune fine with 56c!

Could be lack of power, overheating or unstability.

If your CPU is 56 C at normal speed (and idle) I really recommend some better cooling as that is too hot to do a proper OC.

i reinstalled the cpu and now have this thing clocked to 140mhz X 15. The person i bought the chip from said it could easily handle 150mhz. My cpu temp is now at 47C. But when I put the fsb to 145 or 150 the pc restarts itself before it gets to windows start up screen. Any suggestions? Could it be that i need to update the moterhboard bios?

Would it help if i set the multiplier to 11X and 200mhz fsb? Then raise vcore to 1.7? Plus, how can i lower my +12v? it stays around 13.056 normally but i want it lower.

Well the lowest multiplier you can get without modding the CPU is 13x so you might try that and see if you can get higher. A VCore increase to 1.7V is also likely to help your OC.

And don't worry about the 12V rail... it is still within 10% of the normal. The only way to change the voltage would be modding your PSU. And a faster CPU speed is also likely to lower the voltage as the Athlon draws its power from the 12V rail.

What is your overclock? Like mine, your computer will POST with a vastly overclocked CPU, but it won't start windows. Either add more voltage, or overclcok less.

It very well still could be the PCI/AGP bus clocked too high, making your computer puke, as mine will do over and over no matter if I am underclocking my processor, 148 is just too much for the BOARD (not RAM)to handle.

i added the vcore to 1.7 and changed the fsb to 167 X 13.5 and i get the blue screen with some error like 0c000009c and a bunch of numbers. My cpu stays pretty cool. When its on normal fsb its around 46C. But when i OC it to 2100mhz it goes up to 50C. If i up the vcore more will that help? or is that too dangerous with the xp2400?
