If this information is so important, you should have it backed up in a few different places.

Whatever's wrong, it doesn't appear from here that it's your hard drive.

As TVG says, if this information is your life, it ought to be backed up in multiple places; being worried about the death of a hard drive, which can literally happen at any time, is a sign that you're not responsibly backing up your important data. That's far more important than the performance of your laptop.
