I'm not sure if to upgrade my motherboard and CPU to the following:
GA-X58A-UD3R
And put a x5675 cpu in it and overclock to 4.5 if possible.

OR
Stick with my current mobo and just upgrade the CPU, but I'm not sure which CPU to take and that's where I need help...
Current mobo + CPU:
P67X-UD3-B3
i5 2400

I was thinking to go with i5 2550k / i5 2500k - but will it make a big difference in gaming?
I was wondering if I should go and spend more on an i7 2700k or i7 3770k, but I'm not sure if I can overclock and I heard that the x5675 can smoke them (plus I would use the 6 cores...)

If it were me I would pick up a 3770k on ebay which, with a nice air cooler or AIO water unit should give you 4.5ghz easily and a very nice overall performance boost from your I5 2400.

Gaming...
I'm thinking to go with the i5 3570k since my motherboard supports it to be overclocked, but will it give me any good performance different?

The point is that one of my friends told me it's not overclockable on my motherboard, so I will need a cooler the CPU itself and a brand new motherboard which would be too much for an old CPU (considering I could get better)

Is this your opinion or have you done a cost benefit analysis like I, a mechanical engineer, did?
I can understand your reluctance and have no problem if you want a different CPU.

I have a Z97 motherboard with an i5-4690K at 4.5GHz with 16GB DDR3 RAM.
I won a Z170 motherboard in an art contest. It was completely free.
It would be about $500 to replace my system with an 8 core i7 system based on a free Z170 motherboard.
That would be $500 for a 5% faster PC.

I looked into upgrading my 4 core CPU with an obsolete 8 core i7. That would be over $300.
When I looked into the price of a twelve core Ryzen system it was about $500.
Theoretically my output would be over 200% better for $500.
I sold the free Z170 motherboard.

I determined that a Ryzen upgrade was the best cost / benefit ratio for me.
I do more than just play games on PC. I also use it to earn money.

As always, Your mileage may vary.
Have fun.

Perhaps you meant 8-thread and 12-thread.

There are no 8-core CPUs for the Z170 chipset and the cheapest 12-core Ryzen costs over $700.

Thank you for the correction. I accidentally wrote cores when I meant threads.

You guys didn't get it, I don't have a lot of money to spend and if I would buy a motherboard I'm just going to build the PC from the ground up.

EDIT:
Which CPU should I go with - i5 2550k / i5 2500k, tell me why if possible.

GTX 960 4 GB.

But there isn't a big difference between the i5 3570k to i5 2500k, the 3570k is slightly better...
So I would take the i5 2500k.
i7 3770k, I would go with this chip if I could overclock it which no one is giving me an answer on.

And I know that the K is for overclocking, that's why I'm looking for a chip that likes to be overclocked.

It is older hardware, which is more expensive now unless second hand, your going to spend money for incremental gains regardless unless going with newest gen hardware. I see you said that you would use the extra cores if you had them but if it's strictly for gaming and not streaming or recording I don't see that happening. You would see a much bigger jump going with a new system vs throwing an i7 in your board

You are not really helping.
I'm telling you about my current thoughts which is either going with the i5 2500k considering I will see a good improvement from my i5 2400 or going with the Xeon but wouldn't be cheap since the mobo is costy but on the other hand people compare it to i7s.

If you want to help, you can read the main post and answer since I'm clearly not sure about what should I go with.

Go with a used i7 CPU you mentioned in your OP.

I was wondering if I should go and spend more on an i7 2700k or i7 3770k? Yes. You should.
Four overclocked cores is for now, 8 threads will help a lot in the future.
First you should find a good CPU cooler.
An i7-2600 is $216. The i7-2700K is $299.

The i7-3770K is $179. Find a used one for $100-150.

Buy one and figure it out. I don't know everything.

So why are you even trying to help me? what a dumb answer.
Well heck yeah, I know that the i7(3770k/2600k) will be better in some cases than the 2500k and I could've figured it out without you since there's lots of information surrounding it, I won't find lots of information about my old mobo and that's why I'm here asking if it's worth to go with the i5 2500k over my i5 2400 and if I will see any difference or go with these parts:
GA-X58A-UD3R - MOBO
x5675 - CPU

i5 2500k but you said I7 3770k...

If you can overclock an i5-2500K you can overclock an i7-3770K.
