HELP!! Trying to do install of 98 over 2000.

I’m a NEWBIE!! Attempting to install 98 over 2000 on an old computer. Had a
boot CD, ran FDISK, now I’m trying to use the 98 install disk. (It is a full
version of 98SE with License Key Code.) I was told I should remove boot CD
after running fdisk, put in 98 CD and boot from there. When I do that I get
error msg that says “Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter�.
When I boot to DOS I can see the 98 install files, though they are on C:.
When I try to run the SETUP.EXE file, I get a message that states “Cannot
create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard
drive, you will need to create a MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows�.
I’m lost! Would appreciate any help

It sounds like your hard drive is formatted NTFS (NT File System).

Windows 9x cannot therefore read that drive.
It needs to be loaded on a FAT partition.
However, reformatting will clobber the NT installation
and all of the data files on the hard drive.

If you are OK with that, then Google for Dual Boot
and you will get plenty of help,
or search http://support.microsoft.com/ instead,
or as well. Perhaps you should start there.

Also go to www.bootdisk.com and
download a windows 98 bootdisk.

Whole books have been written about this,
so it is probably better that you jump in
and start reading up on the theory
and come back and ask more questions
when you hit a mental roadblock.

Frankly, you won't get too far is you try to follow
any step-by-step posted in this NG.

There are too many variables that can trip you up.
Things like BIOS protection being set on,
or having the wrong boot disk or disk format
to name just a few.

put your floppy boot disk back in ...boot to that ...run fdisk again and
make sure all partitions are deleted (dos and non-dos)

then create a FAT partition (using the whole drive)....then reboot to floppy
again and run "format c:"

THEN when you reboot with the floppy again you will have C: and D: as
cdrom....you can run "setup.exe" from D: drive and all should be fine.

Hi RTDavies,

What boot CD are you using (WIN98SE startup floppy disk files copied to a
bootable CD?), and what actions did you perform when you ran FDISK?

If Windows 2000 was installed on an NTFS partition, you would need to use
the FDISK utility to Delete the Non-DOS partition (at FDISK Options Menu,
select option #3 and then option #4 in subsequent menu), then create a
Primary DOS partition (at FDISK Options Menu, select option #1 and then
option #1 in subsequent menu) and make it Active (this is assuming that you
are only creating one partition). Once the Primary DOS partition has been
created and made Active, restart using the boot CD (not all Windows 98
install CDs are bootable........I believe only the OEM versions are
bootable), and format drive C. Once formatting is completed, restart using
the boot CD, ensure that you opt to start WITH CDROM SUPPORT. Once you're at
the DOS prompt, replace the boot CD with the WIN98 install CD, and run
setup.
