Help understanding compatibility

I'm struggling to understand compatibility in video cards, I understand that there are specific motherboards for Intel processors and likewise for AMD CPUS , does the same apply when it comes to video cards or will nearly any card work with any motherboard (within reason of course)

I ask this because I want to install a GTX 660 2GB GDDR5 in my current motherboard the ASUS M578L-M/USB3

All Intel-based and AMD-based MBs use the same PCIe X16 interface whether it be version 1, 2, or 3. You can use any AMD/Nvidia card in either MB. And PCIe version are backward compatible.
