if they are SATA you wont need new ones so check wether they are sata or not

Sata is the one on top and IDE is the one in the bottom check which one you have and like i said if they are said no need to change em if they are IDE you will have to change them

as for the MOBO i suggest you go with

or

as for the ram if you do gaming mostly 4-8GB is enough , if you do graphics work i suggest you get 12-16GB

i recommend...
Uhhh, yeah, I'm guessing none of the above. Firstly, yes, you'd need new RAM. And I'm guessing you would need a new video card (PCI-e), a new power supply that has 8 pin EPS instead of 4 pin ATX, a new case possibly to fit the stuff in, not to mention new hard drive and DVD that has SATA plugs instead of IDE, not sure what else right off the top of my head, but that's pretty much a new system in a nutshell as it is.

Your analogy for this is trying to put a V8 in a Yugo. It 'technically' would work, but it would take more than you can imagine to make it all work together. Invest in a new rig, it will save you HOURS of head and heart ache...

Brand named computers use some proprietary parts ,that's how they save money.
for instance your video card.
the 2500k is a great chip , in order for it to achieve it's full potential your going to
want a good board. gigabyte GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 is a cost effective board 160$
Asus Sabertooth P67 B3 TUF Edition Motherboard 200$
ASUS Maximus IV Extreme B3 RoG Edition Motherboard 300$
I recommend one of these though there are more expensive boards
ram 1333 is good I recommend 8gig
you'll need a decent video card if you want to play the latest games
and 500 watts cpu to power it
alternatively you could get an AMD 3870 plus a motherboard and ram and play any game and on ultra with over clocking. for a lot less cash

I would look for a uATX Gigabyte H61 motherboard. Gateway uses standard uATX spec, so it should fit fine. You will need new DDR3 ram as well.

4gb ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231396
8gb ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231422

If you are still using the version of Windows that came with the Gateway, that will also have to be replaced as such OEM copies are generally not transferable to new hardware. 64 bit Windows is best for either amount of ram.

Can someone confirm if I'll need a new hard drive and DVD like scottie said.. I do have a 600w power supply which will do and a gaming card I bought sometime ago. Can't think of name ends with 450. Thanks for help.

Yes they are both SATA so that's taken care of. Now I just need help finding the right motherboard that will fit my computer + the ram. I took a look at the one tlmck suggested and it had really bad reviews. Are all motherboards the same size? I think mine is 10x10.

Thanks for your help I took a look at the ram and it looks great. Ill take a look at the motherboards u have suggested when I get home from work. My phone too slow... might need to upgrade it too.
