As a fun little project for myself, I am replacing the components of a Dell Latitude D620 Laptop (yes, the extremely old kind from 2006) so that it can be used in a modern setting. (Don't just say "Uhhhh buy a new laptop durr hurr. The whole fun of this is the project.) I know I will upgrade the:
1. Screen
2. Processor
3. RAM
4. Hard Drive
5. Speaker (maybe) (is it needed?)
6. Anything else? (I.E. Fan, Heatsink, Bluetooth, Disk Drive, USB Ports, Motherboard)

If you know a component that needs to be upgraded other than these, please try to find a suitable modern replacement. If you have any recommendations for the parts already listed, feel free to say those too, preferably with an Amazon or Newegg link. I plan on upgrading the low-res screen to something that qualifies as "HD" like 1920 x 1080, but nothing crazy like 4K. I don't think there is a graphics card to replace because I'm pretty sure it uses integrated graphics. If I am wrong and it does have that, I want to go all-out and provide the best possible components for gaming and video editing. If it doesn't, I just want something good for basic web-browsing and word documents and stuff that I can give to my mom for her birthday. Finally, if the motherboard needs to be replaced, please recommend parts that are compatible with it. I know this is a lot to ask for, so major thanks in advance.

Solution
I'm doing the same thing. What I learned is that the motherboards come in two flavors, one with the integrated Nvidia Quadro card (R894J) that provides the best graphics but has an issue that it can experience overheating. I myself have had this motherboard for years with no issues but it was enough of a problem that they lost a law suit over it. The second mother board (XD299) has the integrated Intel video card with no issues.
Amazon has some great parts to include a great wifi card replacement that will bring you up to snuff with the new laptops for only four bucks!
The T7600 cpu is the best cpu that will fit on your motherboard.
You can upgrade up to 4gb of ram but it has to be for your Dell latitude.
I was looking at the...

So there is no room for a GPU in the motherboard?

I was looking at the speaker thing myself, still no clue.
I also found this great video and they make a few more that you might find helpful.

Hope this helps.
Cujo

Good luck

Solution
I'm a little late to the party, but hopefully someone sees this. I'm in a similar situation with my D620. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB and installed an SSD a couple years ago and it runs flawlessly. The problem I have run into now is graphics. I understand I need to upgrade the whole motherboard, but I don't want to miss anything and waste time. Do I need to purchase anything other than just the board since the graphics card comes with it? I'll probably go with the XD299 to avoid the overheating issues of NVIDIA (unless that's no longer an issue, in which case I'm open to suggestion)? Do I need to purchase a new cpu or can I use my current one? Or is upgrading the motherboard all for naught if I don't upgrade the cpu? I have external monitor that this machine will most likely connected to so I probably won't upgrade the monitor but if there's anything else I need to purchase with a new motherboard I greatly appreciate your time.
