I am wanting to upgrade my entire build bit by bit but I'm unsure in which to upgrade first when it comes to my GPU and CPU.

Currently I have:
AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
NVIDIA 1060 3gb

My goal is to have a monster system so I want to upgrade to the following:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
NVIDIA 2070 or 2080

obviously I will upgrade the other components to suit but I can only upgrade the CPU or the GPU for the moment because of the sheer cost.

I just want to have some guidance on which to go for first because I know that a high end GPU like that may cause me to have a bottleneck.

Solution
Before deciding on the gpu upgrade, what monitor do you have? If it's 1080p 60hz, then there is no sense in upgrading ur gpu to a 2070/2080.

Decide on the monitor resolution, ultrawide? Curved? 144hz or 100hz? Then choose a gpu accordingly.

I would also wait till the reviews for Radeon VII are out.

You can later decide on the ryzen 3000 series with X570 mobo or the Intel 9900k z390 platform...

That would mean I would have to change the MotherBoard unnecessarily as I'm running AMD at the moment

For two monitors you should get rtx 2080 ti & to prevent it from bottlenecking you should get 9700k or 9900k as ryzen will bottleneck the rtx 2080 ti.
For Z390 motherboard Aorus Z390 Master is best.

intel overclock. you can also overclock amd ya know... I rock an 8700k and built and troubleshot (troubleshooted? English 10/10) a 2600X machine with the same gtx 1080 strix gpu and tweaking both to the same clock speed, intel did beat amd by about 10-15 frames, probably cause of the bigger cache? idk... well intel is better at gaming, but now by that much of a margin

if you want the best performance and best upgradability, yes, you should switch platform. but if you want bang for the buck, I honestly would wait till ryzen gen 3 as from the rumors it should be amazing and even about the same price as current 2700X, with ryzen gen 3 you could probably even get the 2080ti with not bottleneck

and everyone, stop using "bottlenecking" as a boogieman for everyone
