Currently, I have a 1TB HDD in a custom built machine running Windows 7. I want to move my OS to a 512GB SSD in preparation for Windows 10. Here's my plan:
- Move a few hundred GB of non-essential files to an external HDD to get the internal HDD below 500GB.
- Clone the remaining data on the internal HDD to the blank SSD with cloning software that optimized for an SSD.
- Boot from the SSD and format the old internal HDD.
- Move non-essential files back to internal HDD from external HDD for a secondary drive.
Is there anything that could get screwed up in this process? Are there things I need to do to optimize my SSD beforehand (or afterwards)? I've never done this before so any help would be appreciated! (Also any 512GB SSD recommendations below $200) Thanks!
