I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE (No OS has been loaded before) on my new computer, but I'm having trouble. When I get to the "Preparing the Windows 98 Install Wizard" screen, the progress bar gets to 100% and freezes. I've turned off my computer and tried it again, and still it freezes up. I've had the processor tested at the repair center, but it was on a different motherboard. I've also have had the RAM, hard drive, and cd-rom checked. I've also tried loading Windows 98 SE with the minimum requirements, without the sound card and modem.

Why can't Windows 98 SE install? What devices could be causing this problem? Could it be a bad motherboard. Could it be the BIOS settings? If you know of anything email me/post it. THANK YOU!!

Here are my system specs, if it might help:

-AMD Athlon Thunderbird 900 Mhz
-AOpen K72 (Mainboard)-- Via Apollo KX133 Chipset

Are you booting from a floppy and then trying to install?
If so, get a different boot disk.
You may also want to try you copy of Win98SE in another computer or try a different windows disc.

I've had the same problem on several computers.

I found out that it was caused by Win98 Setup trying to modify the boot sector of the harddrive. The BIOS sees this as a virus attack (which is pretty much what Windows is, but nevermind...;-) and displays a warning message. That message doesn't cooperate very well with Win98 Setup and that causes the whole thing to crash.

You should just disable the virus warning in BIOS, and everything should be fine.
