Ok im looking on newegg at some intel motherboards and it says the cpu type on some, for example this one http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130775 only says the cpu type is i7/i5/i3/ Pentium / Celeron. Does that mean a 4th gen haswell cpu like the i5 4670k will only work if i have one like this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131979 that one says 4th gen in the cpu type. Also, what motherboards work for ivey bridge? Sorry for a nooby question : P, im pretty sure i know the answer is it has to say 4th gen for a 4th gen processor to work but i want to make sure. Thanks in advance.

3rd gen Intel CPU's (i.e. i5-3570K)->
1155 socket (example, "Z77 Sabertooth")
4th gen Intel CPU's (i.e. i7-4770K)->
1150 socket (example, "Z87 Sabertooth)
*There are new Haswell CPU's that work slightly better for power management on the new Series 9 Intel chipset (i.e. "Z97 Sabertooth" however they work on the previous 8-series provided the motherboard had a BIOS update. You can find that info at the motherboard support site.
**PCPARTPICKER is great to look at prices, parts, and show compatibility (if you make a "System Build" and pick a CPU it will show only compatible boards. May possibly make a mistake such as showing a motherboard that does not yet have the proper BIOS update though.

Asus has a "TUF" series of motherboards that are highly reliable and carry a 5-year Warranty such as the Z87 Gryphon whic is about $155.

1) If you get a Haswell (4th gen) like the i5-4690K make sure the power supply supports the Haswell/4th gen C6/C7 power state or your PC can crash on resume.
2) Here is an EXAMPLE of a computer build. you may want different parts, and it has no dedicated graphics card (uses the CPU's iGPU).

3) The new i5/i7 CPU's run cooler and overclock better (if you care). The i5-4690K and i7-4790K. Optimal motherboard is a Z97, and a good cooler like the Noctua NH-U12S.
4) Windows 8.1 64-bit is the best OS now, however the interface is an issue for many, myself included. You can get START8 for $5 which basically makes it look like Windows 7, or some free programs.

Yes, though some of the recent CPU's require a BIOS update that some motherboards may not have. You can go to the motherboard support site to see WHEN the BIOS update was done. If a week ago like I've seen you may have a problem, if in January it's likely you won't as store stock should be newer.
Also, some Asus board can update the BIOS without a CPU so it's not an issue for those boards ("Asus BIOS Flashback").

I am updating my pc soon, i will be replaceing the cpu, motherboard, psu and case. I allready have win 8.1 and am not effected by the change at all, i don't really know why everyone is. If you have time would you mind picking me out a 130-150 $ motherboard that works with i5 4670k ? only required thing is that it supports sli or crossfire for the future, aloth it would be nice to have, but not super needed, 4 or more sys fan headers on the motherboard would be nice. If you don't have time thats fine. Thanks for the replies.

Thanks for the motherboard, but i am not mixing up the cpu's, atleast im pretty sure. I know the i5 4670k is 4th gen and seems to be what alot of people say to go with, but i have never heard of the cpu your talking about, is it alot better then the i5 4670k ? I know you said you didn't have anymore time so if you can't replie thats fine but thanks for all your help 😀

The i5-4690K is a refresh of the i5-4670K (you said i5-4680K btw which doesn't exist).
The new CPU costs about $7 more, runs much cooler and can overclock higher.
