help with 980 vs 1070

I am about to build a computer
I have all my parts and was about to order a gtx 1070
But my friend offered me a free 980

What's best? Should I get the 980 and upgrade to new gpu in a few years? Basically how viable is the 980 for gaming now until the next gen of gpu s?

Take the free 980 and save what you would have spent + a few years and when you buy again you'll be able to afford a 1280 or whatever Nvidia decides to call their top card a few years down the line.

The 1070 is more powerful but a 980 for free is the way to go. The 980 is about as fast as the 1060 6GB.

I didn't mention I was running a 520 watt psu
And I am using a 144hz monitor is the 980 still strong with itv

The only game out currently that taxes a 980 even at 1080p resolution is Dues Ex (37FPS on Ultra quality at 1080p http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=25205 ). It's our today's Crysis on steroids.

Other than that, IF you have a 1080p monitor, the 980 should serve you well for the next two years for the Pascal replacement (Volta). I'd LOVE for a friend of mine to give me a free former high end GPU that still rocks today!

Uh, no. Even at 1080p at 144Hz you'll need more than a 1070 to get that equal number FPS in most current games.
