i am looking for a gpu for around 250-260£ for 1440p i found some options like: gtx 980 (used) gtx 980ti (used) gtx 1060, r9 290, r9 390, rx 480 and the new rx 580. i would go for a gtx 1070 but it is to expensive for me i also have a 500w psu but i could upgrade if it would fit within my budget like for the gtx 980ti or r9 390.
i have a r9 270 right now with a amd fx 8350 at 4.5ghz so i dont think a r9 290 would be much of an upgrade, i think

you are going to need a new power supply before you do anything

either a rx 580 or gtx 1060 are not a bad choice for 1440p

your cpu is also on the weaker side, dont expect benchmark numbers from any gpu you get

you will need to tweak settings to even hope to reach ~60 fps

Can you please pass on the make and model of your PSU? If that holds out with quality+reliablitly I'd suggest getting the GTX1060 or the RX580 only becuase they are the new kid on the block but if you're looking at power from older components, you're going to need a beefy PSU like 650W if you want to drop in a GTX980Ti.

As far as upgrades go, you should aim for something that is three tiers higher than what you currently have.
