Hello friends...

I have spent that last two days trying to install Windows 11 on a new build. My friend, who I am building this Windows 11 desktop for, wants to turn on his computer and boot directly to his Windows desktop. I have read so many bad things about installing a Microsoft user ID and password, so I knew I did not want that. So when installing Windows 11, I did a work around so the installer would not ask for a Microsoft user ID and password. However, a shot time later during the install, I got a pop up that said something like "You need to change the password for Terry". Well, this is a brand new install and I never did assign a local password for Terry. But I saw no way around it, so I gave Terry a password. The rest of the install worked just fine. The system is up and running just fine, and no Microsoft user ID or password.

I went to Control Panel & User Accounts. Only one user is on this system, and that is Terry (who is also listed as Admin). I tried to click around so I could remove his password, but I could not find any way to do this. If that is not possible, I thought about making another account for Terry as a user, and not as Admin. Can I do that, and not assign a password to the user Terry? If I do that, will Terry still see the Terry Admin come up when he turns his compute on?

If I make two accounts for Terry (one Admin and one user) I can switch the user accounts so that when Terry (the user) is turning on his computer, he will not be asked for the Terry (the admin) users password? And when I create user Terry, I can make user Terry have no password?

Am I on the right track here?

Any suggestions welcomed.
many thanks,
mraroid

PS: I am not asking for anyone to help me crack a password or do anything close to that. I just hope that I can make a local user account that has no password and I would like help with that.

I don't believe its possible when using a local account to have no password, but someone else could correct me if I'm wrong. This applies for both admin and non-admin accounts.

You could set the computer to never log itself out (unless it is shut down) by going to Settings>Accounts>If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again? (listed under additional settings)>Never (from the drop down menu). This would make it so under normal use, sleep and screen saver would not require a password to be entered to get back to the PC.

" I have read so many bad things about installing a Microsoft user ID and password, so"
What "bad things", and where? There is nothing inherently wrong with an MS account and password.

You have to be really careful about what you read online. I'm quite sure you could find someone that says if you sit to close to a WiFi router, it will melt your eyeballs.

Your friend is going to run into hassles if he ever wants to install something from the MS store.
But, whatever.

Local accounts:
An admin account MUST have a password.
A Standard account can indeed have no password.

You've created a local Admin account. Great.
Now, create a local Standard account. You can leave it with no password.

Log in with that as the regular daily use account.
Power off, turn it on tomorrow...it will log into this local standard account.
No magic needed.

Want to use the Admin account?
Switch User.

Hello all...

All my friends want to do is turn the computer on, and boot to the windows desktop. I have been able to do that for them in Windows 10 and Windows 11. But this latest install did not allow me to do that. It forced me to make a local password for a local admin account.

So, no chance I can create a local user (not an admin user) and have the user just turn in the computer and boot to windows 11?

Many thanks USAF Ret. I will give it a go.

My Win 10 and 11 systems:

MS account - used for licensing issues, or in the incredibly rare instance I want something from the MS Store. In the 2 yrs I've had this particular Win 11 system, I've used the MS account maybe 3 or 4 times. And my "MS account" is a rarely used gmail address.
Local Admin - Admin duties, like installing something or other system config stuff.
Local Standard - Daily driver.
