Hi gents, i need your expertise, ive currently got a AMD Athlon 1Ghz CPU (Family 6, Model 4 apparently). The motherboard is KT133 Chipset.

So, I want to upgrade the CPU, and wondered what one's will be compatible? I presume I cant just get any AMD processor? Does my motherboard restrict me to certain ones?

Thanks for your help

You will be restricted to certain ones, but what model is your motherboard exactly?

STEP TO FOLLOW :

1. Get your MoBo maker and model.

2. Go to your MoBo maker web site and search for the CPU support list.

3. Make sure you'r BIOS version is OK for the CPU you want to buy. Upgrade your BIOS if required.

4. Go to your local PC dealer and buy the CPU that will fit in your MoBo.

5. Install and enjoy it!

MY RECOMMENDATION :
- Buy an Athlon 64 2800+ and a cheap S754 MoBo, this would be a wiser upgrade!
- Wait for PCI-EXPRESS reasy motherboards to be available before upgrading to something potent!

Your fastest CPU would be a 1.4ghz Thunderbird (one hot little dude} with a BIOS flash. I think you need the KT-133A chipset to run anything in the XP family. Since the 1.4 is the fastest 200mhz chip prices remain relatively high. I would E-bay what you've got and upgrade to a more up-to-date platform. You're not going to get enough performance out of a CPU upgrade to justify the cost.

Here is what I recommend: open the window, and throw out the motherboard. Watch until a truck drives over it, then double check if its REALLY shattered, if it is toss the remaining pieces into your fireplace, well, you never know..

Then give the cpu to a friend, and pick up a new MB and CPU yourself. The KT133 was probably the worst chipset ever produced.

Stop it! I'm stuck with one in my back-up PC! You're hurting it's resale value!

If enough people follow my advice (or use common sense), yours might become a collectors item ;)
