I recently obtained a copy of Windows 8 x32-bit, and I would like to install it to my system.

The issue:

When I installed it, my screen was stuck at 800x600, and I could not change it. I have a 1680x1050 monitor, so it was quite an eye-sore. I have an old GPU, and I won't be getting a new one for a couple months, so getting a new GPU as of this moment is out of the question. On my device manager screen, it tells me that I have a Basic Microsoft VGA Adapter.

I have: ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050

I've scoured the Internet for solutions, and there are quite a bit, most of them with broken links to driver downloads.

If I download the driver and let it extract the files needed to the root of my primary HDD (where Windows 8 will be installed), and then try to update my drivers from the files itself in the Device Manager, would it work and allow me to change my resolution to it's optimal value? I'm also unable to play games while it is stuck at 800x600.

Would this work?
Is there any other method I should take instead?
Help is appreciated.

Hi

I finally got a legacy Radeon x1550 vista/7 driver to load on Windows 10 trial
I went to makers web site Saphire not AMD
driver 10_2 is last one available

unzip file if necessary
right click on driver and look for 'troubleshoot compatibility'
(or whatever it is called in Win 8)

run the diagnotstic test ,it makes sone changes then allows Radeon driver programs to install .

The critical point is what happens on re starting my system seems OK
though I have not tested the new video driver yet
look for direct x diagnostics

Hi

Most AMD Radeon drivers use a setup program
If this does not work using parts of drivers such as ini, sys etc will not help

See if the video driver can be updated over Internet

I have a old PC with this graphics card, I will see what I get with windows 10 trial

Vista drivers often work with 7 but not 8 or 10 as I found with old usb wireless n network devices .

I tried updating over the Internet, and it told me that my GPU and OS could not be detected.

Hi

Next time you want to upgrades windows get microsoft upgrade assistant to tell you what hardware and software is going to cause problems

I will try out my old PC with win 10 and x550 graphics latter and see if I can find a fix
Usually you can get 1024 x 768 without a proper driver
But this is much slower displaying info on screen than with a proper driver

Does PC have an integrated graphics chip which is compatible with win 8?
