help with bag of holding

I am having one of my best games and I came across a bones file, yay! I
did not get a bag of holding from Sokoban, amulet of reflection instead. I
found an bones bag of holding, but it is full and cursed. I have 18
strength and can lift it, but cannot cast a remove curse or apply it while
overtaxed, I can't even read a scroll! How can I uncurse this thing to get
at the goodies?

Thanks,

(Spoilers at the bottom.)

You do not need to carry the bag to uncurse it, if you have proper
equipment. Do you know of a device which can remove magical and
divine properties?

Furthermore, even when overtaxed, there are certain actions which you
still can perform, even if you cannot read.

Spoilers:
Zap a wand of cancellation at it or dip the bag into holy water.

Zap a /oCancellation at it. Or the spell, but that needs a highlevel
wizard to cast it.

You could always loot the bag from the ground, drop the stuff on ground,
then cast remove curse.
Or, #dip'ing or a wand of Cancellation comes to mind.

If you want to make some items disappear from the bag...

Don't. Bad advice. When you loot a cursed bag of holding, every item
inside has a non-neglectable chance of disappearing.

> Or, #dip'ing or a wand of Cancellation comes to mind.

Both are good advice. Especially since he's able to lift the bag, which
would probably make #dipping possible.

I was able to dip, thanks for the advice. I tried everything except
that! I got my stuff, headed down to the mines and found a neutral
prieset. I started selling gems to get protection, but my pet dragon
killed the priest! No messages, is there going to be any ramifications?

It doesn't seem likely, but an odd turn of events!

Thanks!

Not if he is overtaxed, I think. In that case, I believe that zapping a
wand of cancellation at it is the only way of getting it uncursed
(unless, of course, by dropping a lot of other stuff he can get to
strained while holding both the bag and a potion of holy water).

If you cannot even read a scroll then zapping the wand of cancellation
seems to be the only way if you do not want to lose anything from your
bag. After doing that it will be possible to bless the bag using holy
water.

Curiously, dipping works even when you are too burdened to read.

Very strange. But true, wizmode confirms it. And it's also impossible
to cast a spell. Curious why Nethack is designed to behave like that...

Many functions have the check_capacity() call, but it is missing in
the dip code; deliberate omission or bug?

No bad effects other than, when you re-enter the temple, there will
occasionally appear a ghost and you will temporarily be paralyzed.

There won't be any.

You are *never* held accountable for your pet's actions.

Not directly, but you will sometimes get indirect effects (abandoned
temple ghosts, Rodney reappearing, etc).

Perhaps it's just mercy. It's bad enough to not get at the holy water
in the bag 🙂

If by chance this bag is on an altar, praying could help
as well. Could a nymph steal the bag, and could I chase her
with, say, E-words, towards an altar, picking up the bag each
time she dropped it? Hmm...

New Game: Relly Clever Solutions -- Breaking butterflies
on the wheel in nethack

Idea: Choose a simple problem with well--known solutions, and
provide an alternate solution with an absurd amount of effort
and some obviously braindead tactics involved.

Example:

Problem: Get a BoH uncursed when it's too heavy to dip
into holy water, but still liftable for you ('overtaxed'),
and there's an altar on the same level.

Boring Standard Solution: /oCancellation.

Assumption: Nymphs can steal such a heavy BoH. (I don't
have wizmode at hand to check, sorry, but glancing quickly
at the source comments of steal.c I didn't find a reason
why not. But CMIIW.)

Solution:

- Step 1: Genocide all dwarves and Umber hulks, then
magic-map the level.

- Step 2: Fill the level with boulders, except for four
squares (bag square, one adjacent, altar, one
adjacent).

- Step 3: Wish for a cursed figurine of a nymph.

- Step 4: Stand on the square with the bag, drop all
possesions, pick up figurine, apply figurine
to the square next to you, pick up bag. Now
the nymph should steal the bag and teleport
away.

- Step 5: Use controlled teleport and try to port on the
square adjacent to the altar, until it succeeds.
(You can also check with telepathy where the
nymph is.) The nymph should stand on the altar
by now.

- Step 6: Kill the nymph, and start a sacc-praying combo
(picking the BoH up before each prayer) until
you get your possesions uncursed.

Come to think of it, one can extend this solution to a
possibly-working one if there's no altar on the level:
First, explore the dungeon below until you find some altar
reachable by stairs or portals (that's the possibly-working
part of it). Then fill all intermediate levels with boulders,
leaving only up/downstairs and one adjacent square free (nymphs
do flee downstairs, don't they?). Chase the nymph downstairs
similarly to the above chase-to-altar method.

Surely you have much better Really Clever Solutions (I didn't
even use Rodney or the riders) to some other problems in nethack.
Share them with us.

Best,
Jakob

No; the only thing that is ever blessed when it's on an altar is water.

Oh, unless he picks it up and prays, of course. Missed that the first time
round. Only, things *lying* on an altar are never blessed or uncursed,
except potions of water.
