i am going to start building my first system.but first i have a few questions.

what is a good mother board.

and how do i know what parts are compatible with a particular mother board.

the processors i was looking at where the amd 1100T and the intel i7 2600k

what would be a good mobo for each of the processors.

Here are some questions to answer before recommending any motherboard.

1) Do you want an AMD or Intel processor (the 1100T or the i7)?

2) Do you plan to SLI/Crossfire in the future?

3) Do you have a preference for USB 3.0?

Realistically speaking, any motherboard on the market right now is good but there will be those that have problems due to the manufacturing process.

Like has been said, the the definition of a good mobo is very open. In order to make sure the components are compatible, look for the socket. For example, the Intel SandyBridge series is a LGA 1155 socket, so you would look for parts compatible with the 1155 socket.

Keep in mind that since your entire build revolves around your motherboard you have to make alot of decisions before you should buy one. Also keep in mind that most expensive is not always better FOR YOU.

A good example of this is the i7 2600K you are looking at. I think you would probably get better use of either the i5 2500 or 2500K, depending on whether you plan to Overclock or not.

also when over clocking should i purchase a after market cooler for the CPU?could i over clock with any mother board or are there specific ones i need to use?

Most modern motherboards will allow you to overclock but you will definitely need to use an aftermarket cooler. I think you should read more on overclocking before you do anything since you don't sound too informed about it.

It depends on the physical form factor (size) of the motherboard but a mid-tower is a safe option to get unless you plan to build your computer and never move it in which case a full tower will do.
