Yo! I am updating my system but want to keep my old GTX 1070. However, the GTX 1070 only comes with VGA G1-B (6 pins + 2 pins) connector cables for the PSU, which is an issue since my PSU only has 8 pin slots that for PCIe/CPU. Trying to connect all 8 pins will not work since the top left 2 pins on the VGA cord are connected via plastic, can I just use the 6 pins without the other 2 pins and plug it in to a SATA port? Or do I need to buy an adapter of some kind? Worth mentioning that my PSU is a corsair RM850x.

I’ve been trying to decipher what the OP is saying, and I’m starting to suspect they are trying to connect a modular power cable from their old PSU. A 1070 doesn’t ’come with a cable’. Did they just unplug the power cable from the old modular PSU, leave it hanging off the GTX1070, and are trying to plug it straight into the RM850x? Did they mean “EVGA G1”?

If this is the case… then they need to unplug any existing cable from the GTX1070 and use the PCIE power cable supplied with the RM850x.

Trying to prevent fireworks and magic smoke here…

Hmmm, pretty sure NedSmelly is correct. Although it seems like I have to order a new PCIE power cable since the two that came with the PSU are being used to power the newer 4070 that I have. I realize that I probably don't even need the 1070 but still wanted to incorporate from my last build. Will probably just use the 4070 by itself for now and if I ever feel like I need more power I can plug in my old 1070 to go with it.

If this doesn't clarify things I could upload pictures. The key thing from my original post was the the connector I was trying to use had the top left pins 'merged' with plastic at the top so they wouldn't fit into a the PSU connection port

Wow @gorb_gorb I think you just dodged two bullets there - plugging in the wrong power cable, as well as browning out your PSU by running two 70-series GPUs in the same system. You should go buy a lottery ticket :)

Seriously, run the dual GPU setup through a PSU calculator before buying more PCIE power cables.
