I'm working on a build that requires 615W by an online calculator BEFORE considering the power needs of my video cards. I'm using 2 GTX580s.

Anyone have any experience with 2-way SLI on these cards and know the wattage I need to run them?

Solution

You are over doing it but a good 300-400 watts. I will suggest a power supply that would be better suited for you. A power supply that is more appropriate and more high end and probably costs about the same. Keep in mind that the point of getting something...

You will need about 950W. Each one consumes around 150W, thats an extra 300W. What on earth do you have in you're system that consumes 615W WITHOUT a video card.

I wasn't able to find a 580 but I was able to find 570's to pair together. Ignore the pricing if you click the link you'll be able to get to the page with the build. I went with your standard overclocking cpu, motherboard, ssd, cpu cooler, and a storage drive. Total est watts 652 I would say you could do 2x 580's with a strong 850w and be just fine :)

Its gotta be something like a Seasonic or XFX.

Hey or even a corsair unit to. Corsairs AX line is pretty boss! I have a AX850 with purchased individually braided cables pretty awesome. The AX860 is at 149 dollars in my opinion a steal considering and is 80 plus plat :)

I believe some of the AX line is made by seasonic. Might be wrong.

Yes they have seasonic OEM in them. However the i version of the AX series for example AX860i uses a digital OEM instead of seasonic the OEM though I can't recall off the top of my head.

I use the best PSU ever made *sarcasm*. It's a HuntKey built X7 900W. Actually pretty decent, but I was skeptical until I read the HW secrets review. But hey, it was free!

Sorry on the response delay. This is my first build, and it's entirely possible that I grossly miscalculated how much power I would need. But here it is:

CPU: i5-4670k
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: MSI Gaming 5 (Z97)
GPU: 2-way SLI EVGA GTX580s
RAM: G.skill sniper series 8GB DDR3 1600
HDD: 1TB WD Blue (soon to be supplemented by SSD)
Case: Corsair 300R

You have not included the power supply that you intend on using.

Oops. Corsair HX1000W

A power supply that is more appropriate and more high end and probably costs about the same. Keep in mind that the point of getting something closer to your actual usage power wise is to increase the efficiency of your day to day use. If you use 100 watts on a 1kw Power supply you aren't in most cases going to have a very efficient system. If anything the only thing you really gain from that in a lot of cases is a fan that never turns on because of the load that isn't being used.
