Below are a list of components I'm planning to use:

CPU: i5-6600K
Cooler: Cooler Master V8 82.0 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home

I’m firm with my choice for CPU and GPU, but would appreciate some advice on the other components.

I had originally intended to purchase the non-k i5-6600 along with an H-170 motherboard, but found a great deal on the k so I purchased it instead. I don’t have any plans to overclock. With that said, what do you think of the motherboard? Budget is important, but I don’t want to go “cheap.”

My choice of power supply, CPU cooler, and case were based upon trying to balance quietness and budget. My assumption with the PSU is that purchasing a model more powerful than my actual requirements would result in it not getting as hot and would therefore not require the fans to run as aggressively. Please correct me if that is a faulty assumption. I liked the case because it contained sound dampening material and washable air filters. (I want to stick with a mid-size case.) The cooler seemed well designed in comparison to others, but I think it may be overkill.

I’ve never owned a system with more than one hard drive, nor have I owned a SSD. I’m comfortable with the storage capacity of the drives I’ve selected, but would appreciate some practical thoughts as to which type of programs are better to place on the SSD…anti-virus software, Windows 10, I-tunes, Microsoft Office?

I also need to choose a wireless/Bluetooth connector, but can’t decide if I want to connect by PCI or USB. Any models you’d suggest?

For context, I plan to play games like Age of Wonders III, Endless Legend, and Pillars of Eternity. It is unlikely that I will play any first person, 3-D shooter-type games. In addition to gaming, this computer will serve as our family computer. I intend to use only one 1080p monitor.

Thanks in advance to those who are willing to help.

Seems like a pretty well thought out build you have their. Motherboard might be a little bit overkill if you don't really plan on overclocking. same thing for the cpu cooler, kind of overkill for someone not overclocking. As for what you should put on an ssd, I suggest either putting anything you use often or any games that have long loading screens onto it. And obviously you should put the OS on it.

Thanks for your thoughts. Are there specific motherboards or coolers that you'd recommend which might be good alternatives (and less overkill)?

Do you think it would be a good idea to put anti-virus software on the SSD?
