Recently retired early from supporting OS's and networks for 36 years going back to an IBM/360 with a whole 32k of memory. I have worked with various hardware over the years but never built from scratch.

I want to build a machine that will last awhile(wife's requirement) that I can use to upload and edit video from old tapes. I don't need a high end gaming machine but do want to be able to upgrade down the road.

In researching hardware between performance, cost, and ability to upgrade later, this is what I have so far for the base parts.
Antec Sonata II Case 450 watt PS
AMD AM2 X2 Athlon64 XP4200+ 1024k
2GB DDR2-667 Crucial Memory
SATA II Drives
Use existing DVD I have

I'm stuck on picking a motherboard to support the above. Onboard graphics and add video card later or add now? Is this overkill for what I want to do? I used an All-in-Wonder in the old machine.

Comments/Suggestions on a motherboard and this configuration would be GREATLY appreciated.[/list]

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, a man after my own heart.
You are off to a wonderful start with the AMD Athlon X2 4200+ Socket AM2 CPU, IMHO the best motherboard for that CPU is the ASUS M2N32 SLI Deluxe http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1163&l1=3&l2=101&l3=300.
I am building a similar system you should check out here,
http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/bought-1503-USD-ftopict205250.html
I have since added a identical HDD (the MOBO has a built-in RAID controller ), MS Win XP PRO SP/2 (retail version) $280.....ouch and exchanged the 1Gig (2x512) Geil RAM for 2Gig's of Kingston HyperX RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820134124 for another $350.....another ouch.
Since video editing is your biggest priority then a quality GPU is in order and a nice video editor or toaster program.
Good luck and speed safely
