help with CPU upgrade

hi all


i have an old machine (sony vaio pcg-fx150) and although it still works well, it's pretty slow at 733mghz (PIII). i'm looking for an alternative CPU to upgrade. the current specs of the PIII in it are:

socket 478
1.6Volts
24.6 watts
internal clock speed 533 mghz

anybody have any ideas as to finding something else that might fit (even if its only a little faster, say 1.0ghz)? TIA

EDIT: are you sure that you have a socket 478 mobo and a P3 on it? I guess P3's are socket 370 only.

that's what SONY told me anyhow and, if i remember correctly, i rean accross another website that said as much as well.

you most likely need a new motherboard

yes, that would be ideal. however, this is a notebook and i don't think that there are many options.

this same motherboard comes on SONY models that feature the 1.0ghz PIII but i don't know how to look for that CPU to purchase it, which is basically my question here. in sum, where can i find out what CPUs are compatible with my motherboard so that i can track down the fastest one?

I'm tired of posting links... to make sure Google for CPU-Z & download it... run it... it's a hardware detection software & it tells detailed info of your CPU.

k, ran it. it seems like right now it's running a Coppermine - 0.18µm mobile Intel Pentium III, BGA, micro-PGA.

what else do i need to know from there? i'm cutting and pasting results below

I know little things about latops... your mobo seems fine... P3's w/ Tualatin cores are all above 1Ghz..so you should look for Tualatins.
