Hey, I'm looking for a new processor.

I have a ASUS Z170-A LGA 1151 motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813132566
I also have a Scythe Cooling Motherboard SCKTT-1000: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JZCHSOK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My current processor is a Intel Core I5-6600K: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...56600k-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-90-ghz.html

Would it be possible to replace my processor with a new one that is compatible with my current setup? Would it be possible to get something much better with a budget of US$400? If yes, what do you recommend I get?

Thanks

Solution
The strongest upgrade with your current motherboard would be a I7-7700K.
About $200-$250 on ebay.
The big gain would be the addition of 4 more threads which would serve you well with issues involving multitasking.
You have plenty of ram.
That is an easy experiment, just swap processors.

If you are inclined to change platforms, look for one that can use your 64gb of DDR4 ram.
Something like a i5-11600k will give you 12 threads and a good boost in single thread performance. About $260.
A Z590 motherboard would be about $150.

Better, yet, look into the recently released alder lake i5-12600K about $320 and a Z690 based motherboard that uses DDR4 ram. The least expensive will be $220

That exceeds your $400 budget, but check out the...

The supported CPU list for your motherboard:

In what way is your current CPU lacking?
You can only go up one generation (7th gen) with that same motherboard.

I am unable to stream 4k HDR.
I also notice slow down say once a month browsing the internet (I have many tabs & programs running at the same time).
I game in 1080p & don't notice a bottleneck from my processor while gaming. But I would like a processor that would futureproof gaming in 1440p if possible.

It is competitive with the i9-11900k.

Many reviews use DDR5, but I see little difference in performance using ddr4

Ok, so if I go with the i5-12600K I only need to replace the motherboard & heatsink?
I can keep my video card, ram, & everything else?

Which Z690 motherboard & heatsink do you recommend?

Thank You

I have no particular opinion on motherboards.

The cooler you can use may be dependent on the case.
I do not think you need exceptional cooling.
I think you now have what was originally a scythe Kotetsu cooler.
It is somewhat unknown, but I used it in one build some time ago.
Quiet and efficient.
I would give it a try if possible.
You will need a lga1700 adapter kit.
https://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/pc-accessory/lga1700-mounting-kit.html
A query to Scythe would verify what kit you need. I think they send it gratis.

Otherwise, if you buy noctua NH-U12s and it is new stock the lga1700 mount will come. cooling would be similar.
For more $, I highly recommend the Noctua NH-D15s,

1. Just to confirm, will my 750W PSU be sufficient for the i5-12600K & Z690 upgrade?

2. I have a Fractal Design Define R5 ATX Tower Case: https://www.genericcomputer.com/prod_one.php?pid=10616
Is it compatible with the adapter kit for the cooler?

3. I just checked the adapter kit that you linked, it mentions it's compatible with "Kotetsu Mark II SCKTT-2000/SCKTT-2000TUF"
The CPU cooler I have is a Scythe Kotetsu SCKTT-1000: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JZCHSOK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Is it compatible with that adapter kit?

Thanks
