Help with ddr2 RAM plz

hi guys, i will get new MOBO, but is ddr2, do you think 6 GB or 4 GB of ddr2 RAM will bottleneck two hd 5850 in crossfire??, i think its "samsung pc2-6400"

the CPU will be amd phenom II x4 955 BE

Well that is pretty slow memory @ 400/800 MHz, but your question is about 6GB vs 4GB which will render no difference. However, yes the 400/800 MHz will defiantly lower rendering FPS.

6GB only can works in single channel unless that u use 2x2GB + 2x1GB for dual channel.

The RAM amount is only important if u work with many Adobe or Autocad applications at the same time.

The RAM type is very important since DDR2 only fit and works with mobos that support DDR2 even if u see that are very similar to DDR and DDR3.

You say that is Samsung PC2-6400 that means that is DDR2 @ 800MHz in dual channel so u are OK.

3x2GB is for tri-channel and that feature only works with DDR3 plus Intel i7-9xx series and X58 chipset not for AMD and less with DDR2.

So that configuration 3x2GB only can run in single channel.

right now i have a 32 bit operating system, so im only using like 3.3GB of my ram, when i change the mobo, case and CPU, i will just move those 4 gb of ram to the new mobo and add another hd 5850 and CPU. while im gaming, my memory usage just gets to like 2.8 gb, even playing Metro 2033. but my question is, will this slow ddr2 ram be a bottleneck for my new parts??

Crossfire and SLI depends more of the mobo and CPU and not from the RAM.

The DDR2 only can limit the OC of ur CPU using the FSB since DDR2 can run @1200 max but is very hard to get that speed stable but not bottleneck CPU, GPU or Crossfire.

thx man, i will stay with the 4gb of ram since there will be no problem, and get the amd phenom ii 955 be, i think i will not overclock it or just a little bit.

It was a note acknowledging @saint19 comments; your MOBO has 4-DIMM Slots.

If true then you are totally looking at the WRONG DDR. Your MOBO supports Dual & Quad Channel DDR3.

Dual Channel is more efficient than Dual Channel, and since your MOBO supports the 1600 MHz DDR3 ith will increase the FPS by 2-5+FPS and probably more from your initial starting point of {800 MHz DDR2}.

megagabobe1 check the jaquith's comment since if he is right u need change the RAM for a DDR3 kit and not DDR2.

If the mobo support DDR3 i'd go with the 4GB kit that jaquit recommends since has very good reviews and is very good for price/performance.
