I need help with some things. I cant really make up my mind about some things. I planned on getting a fx-8150 and I am wondering if it is too much or too little for gaming. I want to make videos, things like lets plays with some friends. I am set on a asus radeon 7870 2gb. a 500gb hard drive. I don't know which case to get and not sure about the motherboard. 8gb ram. 600w-700w power supply. I have a 24" 1080p tv I use right now for console. i want to get a computer for school so i decided why not gaming. i need some advice and help on which cpu i should get. play games quiet a bit, games like battlefield 3, minecraft, a big varity of games like that. and i want to do some video making with some friends. i plan on spending maybe around $600-$700. thanks in advanced.

thanks for the quick response. I don't need the ssd right off the bat but I will pick one up maybe a month or more after I get the build. some people were saying the fx-6300 was actually better than the 8150 in gaming. is it true? and would it have a significant drop in any other performance than the 8150 or barely noticeable?

I actually wouldn't get AMD period on a gaming rig. Go Intel instead. The 8150 is *NOT* a good CPU, the 8350 is an improvement but the i5-3350P is better than both of those for a gaming rig. I would leave the SSD off (not really a good choice) and invest in a better motherboard and CPU:

This would be a much more wiser investment of $750:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3350P 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($82.55 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.98 @ Outlet PC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB Video Card ($234.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($70.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.98 @ Outlet PC)
Total: $761.45
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Better CPU, stronger GPU, better case with SSD support, and better power supply.

ok would a z77 board be better for over clocking than the h77? and how would the i5 be better than the amd for different things other than gaming?

I am also on the budget so I cant go very far over.

z77 is the mobo u are looking for if u want to overclock
i5-3570k is a very good cpu the only amd cpu which will compete with it would be fx 8350
if u are going to use multithreaded apps than get a fx 8350 and single core performance of i5 is better than amd cpu's

yea. im going to be doing more than gaming. like school work, video editing and some application stuff. so I was thinking maybe something like this :

CPU: AMD FX 6300
MOTHER BOARD: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
GRAPHICS CARD: Asus Radeon hd 7870 2gb
RAM: Corsair Vengence (8GB)
CASE: rosewill challenger u3
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue (500GB)
POWER SUPPLY: some kind of 600w-700w
OPTICAL DRIVE: DVD Burner 24x

I seen some gameplay footage of battlefield 3 and crysis 3 at stock frequencies and bf3 was maxed and crysis 3 very high all with good fps with very similar set up, just an msi 7870 instead of asus. im estimating that will be more at the $700 end of my budget.

It's an incredibly bad idea to buy any power supply off the shelf without doing any research first. This is perhaps the single most crucial component of any system and getting the wrong one will end very badly. Make sure you get a quality supply, don't get a junk one.

yes i understand the fx-6300 is not better than the 3570k but it is good enough for me. i would definately get the 3350p if you could over clock it as easily and as much as the fx-6300 and 3570k. but im happy with the choice of the 6300. the 3570k would be about an extra $100 than a better motherboard for it would put me a fair bit over my budget. but any suggested builds with the fx-6300 and a good maker of the 7870 would be greatly appreciated. I could use some ideas of what to get. and I heard the colour of the cd drive could affect the performance of it. how the black color attracts heat and it gets hotter faster and the lighter colors do better.

sorry, I never seen your response some how. the power supply is one of the things I need help with. that and buying a good case for future upgrades which isn't expensive. is there any power supplies or cases you could recommend that would be some what "future proof"?

While there really isn't such a thing as future proofing, the one part of your build that will stay the same are the case and power supply. That's why I always recommend buying one. As far as that goes that depends on how much you want to spend before I will make recommendations.
