Hey guys,

I recently purchased the GIGABYTE G1.Sniper H6 LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard at Newegg. Link below. My question is if I lose any video card power by putting my card in a lower pci slot. If I move it from the upper PCI express 3.0 16x slot to the lower PCI 2.0 x16 slot, how does that effect the cards operation? The only reason I want to do this is because my Asus GTX970 is huge, as most newer cards are. It covers the PCI express x1 slot below it, and if I put my Soundblaster Z soundcard in the other one, it basically pressed up against my video card. I feel this wont give any room to breathe for either with the heat the card puts out. I really want to use my soundcard, with my Astro A50s or any headset I purchase. Is this possible? If not, should I just purchase a new motherboard that has more room for my soundcard plus video card.

I want the best sound possible out of my Astro A50s, or a pair of Seenheiser 363Ds im looking at. Thanks guys.

Solution
The top slot is where you should install the GPU. The second slot is not a x16 slot. It is a x4 slot. Installing the soundblaster card in the second x1 slot will be OK. The GPU fans blow in and away from the soundblaster card anyways.

For peace of mind you can monitor the temps with speccy or another app.

Well, if you put it in the other PCIE slot, it will disable the x1 slots so you won't be able to use your sound card. Which, I guess will indirectly solve your problem. But, it will only run at x4 speed not x16. I imagine that would result in a small performance loss.

Ok thank you very much. Now I will see if the soundblaster makes a difference with my astro a50s, or if I should return and buy a pair of Sennheiser 363Ds or G4ones. Thanks!

but what about the way the soundblaster card sits, with the heat it puts out?
