Help with graphics card issues

Okay I'm not sure where to put this. I have a new build with an i5-6600k, gigabyte z170x gaming 7 motherboard, and a powercolor hd 7970. It seems that if I try to use the card in the x16 slot I get crashes and such, but if I use it in the x8 slot it seems to works fine. I can use my old 550ti in the x16 and it works fine. So I'm wondering what could be wrong?

Most likely driver issues, as the two graphics cards you have are by two different brands. Your HD 7970 is by AMD and your 550ti is by nvidia.

1. Put your old GPU back in

2. Boot and uninstall ALL graphics card drivers

3. Turn off your PC

4. Put new GPU in

5. Boot

6. Install new AMD Drivers

I have already done all that multiple time and used display driver uninstaller each time.

I'm not sure. I think I have it disabled.
