Help with graphics card upgrade (Sort-of urgent)

I bought a new graphics card that came in the mail today, a radeon HD 7770. Upon installing it I noticed that my monitor has a VGA cable and the graphics card doesnt not have a VGA slot. My monitor was supposed to come with an HDMI cable but for whatever reason it wasn't there. Oh well, I will buy a VGA to HDMI adapter later.

My question is how do I know the graphics card is even working without plugging my monitor into it? I plugged my VGA into the onboard graphics slot and it booted normally and I can use the computer, and when I use AMD's auto-detect driver it says it didn't find anything. Does this mean my card is defective, or I installed it wrong? OR is it because I didn't plug in the monitor?

You will not know until you are able to plug it in. The drivers will install for a bad card just as it would for a good card. You are just going to have to be patient.

The high end ones might not as much. But that will allow you to convert a DVI-D to a VGA and you can use your monitor. otherwise go out and buy a HDMI/DVI Cable

This HDMI cable would probably be cheaper than buying an adapter:

Windows is detecting the on-board graphics card as your video adapter so it isn't going to update drivers for the other one.

Once you use the one you installed, you should be able to install the drivers. Theres a chance that you will need to tell the system BIOS which gpu to use.

It did not come with that, I bought it refurbished so that's probably why.

I mean... It didn't work that way when I setup my Bitcoin mining computer...

Then your Bitcoin mining computer has a bios that didn't make you choose?

I bought it from NewEgg, I guess I called it new because it was my first time owning it .
