I recently installed a Intel Wireless AC + Bluetooth Mini PCIe card into my desktop.

When I bought the chip I thought it would come with the antennas, but it did not. I had a broken laptop laying around so I hacked the antennas out of it and used them for the chip.

They look like this.

Now it works, but the signal is very random at times, and gives a high ping to devices connected to it. Is there something I can do to improve this? What exactly are the antennas, and could I just make a diy version myself? I tried looking around for information on how these antennas work, but could not find much, and i assume I cant find anything because I have no idea the proper names of the antennas. Could anyone help me out with this?

They are inside the case but I taped them up real good so they are not touching any metal. When I took them out of the laptop the silver tape was touching a metal bracket so I installed them the same way in the desktop, only I taped them up real good so they wont fall and hit the motherboard. Once I get a better connection ill build a enclosure for them to permanently sit.

What would happen if they did touch metal though?

OK, so I took your advice and moved the antennas outside of the case and bam perfect signal. Thanks a ton. Know any good places I can read more about this stuff, and get a better understanding of how these antennas work?
