Hi,

I have a problem with my computer that I have not been able to resolve since early this year.

The problem is this - the image displayed on the monitor will disappear and reappear, sometimes once every 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes in rapid succession. Usually, when this happens, the monitor will 'forget' its settings and the image on the monitor will need to be readjusted so that it is centered and fits properly on the screen.

I know this sounds like a simple problem but I have tried many things suggested by many very helpful people but have not been able to fix it.

The current config of the machine follows:
MSI K7T Turbo2 m/b,
AMD XP 1600+ CPU,
512 MB RAM in three slots (256, 128, 128 in that order)
LeadTek GeForce 3 Ti500,
Eizo F552M 17" Display
Logitech cordless optical mouse,
Standard Keyboard
Windows XP Pro.

I have changed everything from:
1. The CPU - from AMD 1GHz TBird to the current XP 1600+
2. The m/b - from Soltek to the current MSI K7T Turbo2
3. The display card - from GF3 Ti500 to GF4 MX
4. The monitor - the original one was a 19" display
5. The power supply - Prior was a 350 watt, now its a 450 watt unit.
6. BIOS and drivers - all are latest revisions for the m/b, display, and via 4in1.
7. I have also used only 1 memory module to isolate the problem, thinking that it originated from bad memory.
8. The monitor cable.

Nothing has helped. I am about to throw this machine out the window (I'm thinking that maybe I should have done this long ago and go get a new machine - I have spent so much money already...). If anyone knows what I'm missing, I would really, really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Nik.

did you test each of those components 1 by 1, ie, swap the monitor only and see if the problem persists, nope. so you put the original monitor back and swap the video card this time... .

That sounds like a failure with the Monitor's BIOS firmware. So I think its monitor related. I agree with 10GHZ's suggestions for resolving the issue. Go ahead & give it a try.

Hi,

Yes, I did test them individually to isolate the components. The only piece I could not actually replace was the memory as I did not buy new. But It was always the case that I used the old component, changed with the new one, still got the same result, and then changed back to the old component before moving to the next item.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not so sure that it is the monitor's firmware. It happens on both my displays, a 19" and a 17". The 19", BTW, is damaged as a result of this problem (I think so...).

To make sure its not the monitors that are causing the prob, did you try another Video card to make sure its not the Video Card that is causing the Issues. If the problem goes away with a different Video Card, then it is safe to assume that the problem most likely lies within your video card.

Hi,

Yup, I swapped out my GF3 Ti500 for a GF4 MX. Still had the same problem. Now I'm kind of wondering whether it could be a driver thing. The only thing I haven't tried is to go back to the first set of drivers that I had ever used (the one that came with the video card).

Even though all nVidia cards use the Detonator Drivers, it is probably still a good idea to reinstall them when you swap cards.
